Planning to take my daughters out squirrel hunting this weekend. They have never seen a fox squirrel besides the millions of gray squirrels in MN :fudd: :fudd:. Does anyone know the best WMA to hunt for squirrels, mainly fox squirrels? Or a private land that I can bring my daughters to?

Welcome to MNO!!!   ::welcome:: ::welcome:: ::welcome:: ::welcome:: ::welcome::

You're in the right spot for information from our members.  Depending on where you live, I'm sure you have a WMA close by.  Keep in mind that WMA rules and regs will be a bit different from public land so read up on your particular one.

I'm not sure if one WMA has more squirrels than others but look for a wooded one I guess.  I have one 3 minutes from my house and has a mixture of hardwoods.  I have see plenty of squirrels roaming around.

Seems to me we used to get a few fox squirrels around St. Joseph west of St. Cloud.

Thanks for the welcome!! ;D Do you mind me asking which WMA you're talking about?

Its the Otsego WMA.  The West Unit is a 40 acre tract of grassland and shallow cattail dominated wetland within the City of Otsego. The East Unit is a 160 acre tract of hardwood and lowland forest with some grassland areas bordering the 60 acre Rice Lake.

Here's the link for the Otsego WMA from the MN DNR website.

Here's the link for the WMA main page from the same site.

Well it's a town but if that area is convenient for you I would check and see what public land is around there that you could hunt on.

hey thanks for the reply guys! I'll travel any distance as long as I'm away from too many others hunting in the same area and as long as my daughters enjoy their first hunting experience. That would make me happy.
