January is here and we are still out chasing Walleye! As they have been much of the winter, the fish are deep. Our houses are spread out north of Pine Island. However, we are doing the majority of our fishing in 30-32 feet of water. That puts us 6-9 miles out on the lake from the lodge. Some of the Walleye are hanging near the bottom and some are suspended. The suspended fish are more aggressive. The suspended Walleyes seem to move around sporadically and unpredictably. Having a flasher makes it much easier to catch these fish. Our guides have been recommending guests fish one line down by the bottom and one line 10-20 feet off the bottom. It seems strange to target Walleye so far off the bottom, but out over the deep mud on Lake of the Woods it can be extremely effective. As expected Sauger numbers continue to be good with some sorting needed to find good keepers.

A New Year’s Eve snow storm brought 8-12 inches of fresh snow and howling winds. The weather has finally calmed down today and we are working on re-opening our plowed road today. The storm left behind some colder temperatures. Daytime highs are expected to be in the single digits most of the upcoming week. With the recent storm out of the area, fishing should only be getting better over the next few days.

Happy New Year!
