Does anyone one have any solid personal experience in hunting hogs?  A few of us are planning a trip to an area that we can drive to in one day, of course taking turns driving.  Really not looking for a guided hunt, just access to an area that has a hog problem, a motel that has good beds and a shower with hot water.  A real home town restaurant is always a plus that we can get a served breakfast and is still open until a couple hours after sunset so we can grab supper.

Any suggestions?

edited to add the bold to my question.

Please don't take this wrong, but I have heard something different and my wife is from Wisconsin.  One of her parent's neighbors told my brother-in-law about their cousin that leased hunting land and the buddy that he leased it with had problems with hogs on their cousin's land. so if............

I know you mean to help, but as asked, I would like to hear from someone with first hand info and not info based on a story that a Google search would do me better.

I have hunted hogs by Tivoli Texas....We made the trip in 19 hours by switching off!  We met an old Mexican hog trapper by talking to the local elevator who buys wild hogs for meat export.  They pay the trappers .30/lb for the hogs.  They were trapping on public and ranch lands along the Guadalupe river and were willing to show us a spot as long as we gave them $30 a hog, which is what they were paid on average.  It was on public lands, but we gladly paid the $30 to save us a bunch of time finding them.  We only ended up with one hog, but the trapper would have sold us more that he had trapped if we wanted more cheap meat!  The ranchers all around the area have paying hog hunt clients, so were unwilling to let us hunt for less than $200 per day on their deer feeders

I hunted feral hogs in West Texas back in 2007.  I went down to meet a friend who was guiding goose hunts in the AM and hog/predator hunts in the PM.  I ended up taking a small boar when I was down there.  Here's the link to a previous thread on MNO regarding feral hogs.

I honesty don't know how far south you need to drive to find feral hogs to directly answer your question.  Texas has thousands of them and they run around like deer up here.  Do I know of public land or ranchers who want them gone? No.  But I do know that guide services will set you up and you'll pay $$$ for it.

Hope this helps my friend.

Thanks.

I hear so many mixed reports.

Hogs are a big problem, they are multiplying and doing massive damage, but ya, I need $100 a day per person to shoot them.

Kinda like prairie dogging in SD, I had several very good spots to shoot and did not need any Indian guide or reservation license.  You just have to find such spots and that is what I am trying to do with a hog hunt.

I think dogging spots are so few and far between in other states except for the Dakota's and other Midwest states that people will welcome you instead of charge.  Hogs are causing more and worse damage yet becoming big business for ranchers and outfitters. I can't blame them for making a buck.

even something as basic as paying a fee to enter wouldn't be bad.. but allot of the places on line have "trophy" fees and what not. it's one of those things where it would be nice to find a buddy who's done it a few times and can point you in the right direction
