So my fiancee Just moved to a small apartment on Lower Twin Lake in Brooklyn Center and I was wondering if any of you guys could tell me alittle about the lake and also there are tons of small crappie, sunfish and carp washing up on shore. Why is this? I have never seen a lake this bad. Is it a parasite or does part of the lake freeze out?

I am not familiar with that lake but if the fish are washing up on shore they experience winter kill from low oxygen levels.  I think a lot of smaller lakes will have had a problem this year.  All that early snow blocked sunlight causing a early weed die off.  The carp usually are the last to go so hopefully it didn't completely freeze out.

Upland I think that lake has had water quality issues for as long as I can remember. I suspect there is a lot of runoff and it's probably a pretty shallow lake. When I was a kid there was a very popular beach at Twin Lake. Someone once told me they use to dump a lot of soap in it to keep it clean - this would have been in the 60's. I have no idea if that is true of not.

Thanks guys, I kinda figured it would be you two or HD that would give me the answer.  I accually talked to her landlord and i guess he called the DNR and asked about the fish problem today and they also told him it was from the early snowfall and oxygen levels being low. There are TONS of carp washing up, at his moment there are 7 of them on shore and they cleaned the shore yesterday, they hauled out 2, 55 gallon drums of panfish and acouple pike and 1 drum of carp.  I  notice there are still fish surfacing in the shallow water so i dont think the winter killed everything off. As for the soap did some lakes accually do that? Never heard of it before...

Like Fawkinnae said, that lake has always had water quality issues. Grew up a few miles from that lake through the fifties and sixties. Had an apartment about two blocks from the beach in the early to middle seventies. A lot of summers they would close the beach for long periods of time because the water would get so bad. The upper portion of Lower Twin, the part north of HWY 100, is actually fairly deep. I think it is 40 some feet if I remember right.
