June 12th Fishing Report

All roads still open into Pierre and fishing north of Pierre on Oahe going strong with most people that are on the main bite catching limits of walleye. Fished mostly in the Cheyenne river from mouth to Minniconjou area and had limits easily by midday. A lot of little juvenile fish around so you have to release a lot of fish to get quality stringers. Make sure you handle these fish carefully and if live bait fishing cut about 10 inches of line and leave the hook in the fish if gut hooked as this is the only way they live. If the fish is un-releasable the right thing to do is keep it and eat it even if it is small. You will feel better when you do this. These little guys are our future fishery. The bite at West Bend got tougher and less fish coming in there. Whitlock Bay area going strong but once again it takes going thru a lot of smaller fish to get the right ones. Best bite 10 ft or less with night crawlers bait of choice now. Spinners working along with trolling shallow plugs. Fishing colder water around lower end of lake harder but bigger fish avg. with pitching jigs shallow best. No info on salmon fishing as dam area closed and very few boats out for them. If coming up to Pierre check routes to take as I am hearing interstate 29 closed or 1 lane in some places due to flooding.
