:USA: Ladies and Gentlemen--Clean Your Guns!  Pheasant Opener in South Dakota is only two months away (15 Oct).

As I reported last week, the OWLL operational hunting area of Eastern South Dakota is really shaping up for a great Fall Pheasant Season.  The population of young pheasants is looking extremely positive; as reported by the local GF&P Game Warden.

A few things to keep in mind when preparing for the upcoming 2011 SoDak Pheasant Season are; Lodging, License, Dogs & Target Practice.

LODGING: Start planning and booking your hunt.  (WWW.OWLLHUNTING.COM)

If you are looking for the most cost effective/economical hunting lodge operation--in which focuses on a DIY public hunting mantra, then let the Oak Wood Lakes Lodge be your one stop shop.

With rates of $3,000/week for any size group, how can you go wrong.  If your your group is smaller, the OWLL also offer weekly rates of $500/gun with a minimum of 4 guns.

If you just can break away from either work or the spouse  :queen2: for a week then explore the OWLL day rates of $100/gun, with a minimum of 3 guns/day.  All pricing and bookings are found on the owllhunting.com website under the "bookings" tab.

DOGS:  Make sure your dogs are in shape before the season. Dogs need exercise too.
Make sure you are doing most of the exercise in the morning this time of year. It is really dangerous to work a dog hard if it's hot outside no matter how good of shape they are in. If you are a city dweller, take your dog to the nearest wildlife management area for some "realistic" training. Good way to get them out in cover to work a bit. The training/exercise walks will help get your dog ready; just like an athlete it's a bad idea to be totally out of shape and then go do a rigorous workout right away...ease them into the heavier work.  Don't forget, if you are working/exercising your dog more, that you will need to adjust their diets accordingly.

TARGET PRACTICE:  Simple put, don't be that guy that gets to the field on the first day of a hunt and misses everything that presents itself to you.  Get out to a local skeet range or just buy a hand thrower and head out to a old dirt road and practice breaking some clays!

Until next time--HUNT DAKOTA with the OWLL!
