You could get lucky and kill a buck in velvet but highly doubt it in minnesot as far as scrapes maybe mid october give or take a week I have personaly never had luck with mock scrapes but thats me so good luck

If you shoot a buck very early in the season, you may be able to get one in velvet - but for the most part, it will be shed, or have a majority of it off.  It isnt uncommon to see bucks with velvet hanging off the bases when the season opens.
ND has an early season where you can get a velvet buck - but rarer in MN.

To my knowledge, you can see scrapes any time of the year, but when the bucks are really active towards the beginning of the rut and when the bucks starting to get more territorial is when they would be more useful.  As bonecollector said, most likely October.

thanks for the advice when i get the photos back from my trail cam ill decide if im going to do a mock scrape or not. if the the buck to doe ratios is way off i dont think i will. my thery is why it works on tv shows is they A. are not fair chase or B. the buck to do ratio is practicly 1.0

my buddy about 5 years ago shot a 6 point  during rifle season.. rack was in full velvet.. when we gutted it, it had both sets of junk. very strange.. anyone looking for "free venison" that year got it from the tranny buck

i think the tv shows are like 3+ bucks to 1 doe. that way there is more competition for breeding so they see more bucks and only the dominant ones get to breed the does. plus it makes the dominant bucks have to show themselves more and they have to travel and leave there comfort zones.

on the land i hunt i see most of the bucks holding velvet the first two weeks of the season i have seen a few holding velvet into mid october but not many as far as scrapes go bucks will make them year round and rubs are made for two reasons to  shed velvet and to mark territory for breeding if you get alot of time in the woods early season you might get one in velvet good luck
Hunting is not life and death. It is more important than that.

most of the bucks i see during the first week of bowhunting are shed, theres a rare case, and different parts of the state the deer are different on that aspect. usually in my area they are shedded by the time the season opens.. at this point 16 days couldnt go by fast enough, its driving me nuts. i need to get into the woods!!!

My studies show that in SE Minnesota, older bucks and even 2 year old will gnerally have most ot their vevvet off, due to rubbing, and that they will make (paw) scrapes as soon as they shed velvet, during the last week of August or first week of September. But, some may keep velvet later, sue to low testosterone levels..
