Don't forget to dump out( the water) your bait buckets if fishing on infested waters.

               2011 Minnesota Fishing Regulations
DNR Information: (651) 296-6157 or 1-888-646-6367 (MINNDNR)
• Only preserved rainbow smelt and Cisco may be used as bait. Freezing
is not a preservation method. Preservation can only be done by permit
from the DNR. All labeling from the preserved smelt and Cisco must be
carried on the person when angling until all that preserved bait is gone.
• You must exchange water in bait buckets with tap or spring water prior
to leaving any infested waterbody to prevent the spread of invasive or
fish diseases.
• Importing live minnows into Minnesota for use as bait is unlawful.
For additional information about taking of bait see page 70.

Scott,
Our Ciscoes in Ely come from VHS free water (we had them tested) are packed, and frozen just like they were before.
You won't find them in the twin cities to the best of my knowledge.
FRESH, FROZEN CISCOES are available at these shops:
Mike's Holiday (Tofte and Grand Marais) Buck's Hardware (Grand Marais),  Lucky Seven Stations (many different towns), Marine General, Fisherman's Corner, and Chalstrom's (all in the Duluth area) The Great Outdoors, and Voyageur North Outfitters (both in Ely), and a few shops in International Falls.
These are not the treated Cisco we had to use last year.

G.O, what is the average length of those ciscos?  I will be making the artificials this weekend.  I want to stay as close to the real length as possible.   I was even thinking with the hook slot a person could stuff a piece of a cisco in there and pin it for scent.

Are you asking about the Smelt you'll be making for me, or Cisco length for another lure??
Our frozen Ciscos are about 5 1/2 to 7 inches in length.

I confused the two.   :bonk:   :sorry:   I will stick with the 2.5-3.5 length.
