OPP helicopter plucks man from ice

TAY TWP. - An OPP helicopter was called in Wednesday morning to pick up a man who was walking on the ice towards open water near Methodist Island in Severn Sound.

Southern Georgian Bay OPP got the call around 8:30 a.m. and responded with Simcoe County paramedics and Tay Township firefighters. OPP say the man was spotted walking past the island towards open water. The OPP helicopter was diverted from another search and was at the scene within minutes.

The helicopter pilot located the man and with the assistance of his co-pilot, the man was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act and brought to shore where he was transported to Georgian Bay General Hospital for treatment.

The OPP urges ice surface users to stay clear of the ice at this time.
