With no snow on the ice and the ice being VERY! clear and only 6 inches or so thick. We are finding that the fish can see your movement through the ice. Several fisherman we talked to said, they have seen Northerns and other fish right through the ice swimming by.

We have found that you have to move away from the tip ups to get some action. If your standing around by them BSing and moving around...not a single bite.

On the lake we been fishing, I can walk along and see the bottom right though the ice. when I'm looking through the hole, it's like being in a dark house. you see the bottom clear as day...like a tv screen.

Anybody else got any observation's to share on these clear ice conditions?

Hey I noticed that too.

Monday me an the ol goat were out spearing an I went to get my thermos back. Of course it was empty. I was kneeling down chattin for about a minute a told him I was leaving. He said one just came in and without thinking about it I stood up to leave. I was on the sunny side of the house,so I think my shadow spooked the fish.

I don't think it spooks them if you just sat on the ice. The movement you make is what would spook them. I don't know about you but sitting still in a deer stand I can do, not so with fishing. That's why it's nice to have a little snow but we have none.

It is kinda neat too the other day while scouting some for some lakes to spear I came across a muskrat under the ice. I didn't chase him but followed him til he went back into his den. It's amazing how long they can hold their breath.

Gotta ditto the sentiment that the clear ice make sthe fish easy to spook when they see you. Its happened to me on two trips now. C"MON SNOW! ....at least 2-3 inches please.
