When on vacation in the BWCA area I portage across into another lake and back daily. We fish with leeches, crawlers, & artificial. I was reviewing regs recently. If anyone portages from one lake to another they have to drain their existing water from the bait bucket/container before entering the lake they are portaging to. I do understand the theory. So It would seem impossible for people to take live minnows into a portage lake since they would die without water while portaging.
 
I also see that it's illegal to dispose crawlers into the ground and they must be thrown into the trash. Now this one I don't understand the reasoning for at all. So in essence what I'm asking is:
 
1. How does one transport live minnows without water across a portage without killing them.
 
2. What is the reasoning behind not releasing live unused USA crawlers into the ground in MN. ?
 
  This should draw some interesting discussion.

I had thought about the bottled water deal before as it would have been the only way to do it. Fortunately for us we don't fish with minnows in the B-dub. I would venture to say that a lot of tickets could be given out for that violation.

I never knew that crawlers weren’t native to northern MN. If you want outdoors questions answered just ask on MNO.

I have a plastic minnow bucket with a stryofoam liner.  It take a long time to empty.  I can tip it up upside down 10 times and still have water come out.  Question is how far can the CO go to find that "water" that has been transported?

If it was me I would just "stash" the bait on the lake and hope they don't become a meal for some creature.

I use a 5g bucket line with form and put a flower bucket that just little smaller, Then I use a air rater And I come with water and leaver with the same water, Never use lake water. I use a fish tank pump and I put a cigarette light in and got a convert from 12V to 110 This way I can leave it on the hole time, When back at the house change water and pug it in to the wall outlet, If hot out add ice to your bait to keep the water at the right temp.

I think Bobby and wildlife would have figured out a way to escape from Alcatraz.

Just a suggestion, if you are all BWCA the just follow the laws and suck it up. Bring only the bait you need and there will be no need to bring any back out. That would be a worm for you and a bucket worth for Borgie!

That could take you a long time to caught the fish that stoles your bait    I am 20 minnow short 

Now Lee I have been hearing that Live bait will be banded, There talk now if people do not start taking responsible that all live bait will be band.

outa every time I've ever been to the BWCA we never brought in anything but artificials.. rapalas were made for those lakes. we've had spots where you bounce that deep running shadrap off the side of the rock jiger deep and you got a walleye...  and the northern... something about fighting one when your sitting in a canoe
