"locks , or not"

 LOCKS OR NO LOCKS, that is the question ? last year i was broken into for the second time in 20 yrs. the vandels ripped the door open, and did not touch a thing. just to see what was in it i guess? so my Q. is do you lock your door on a permenant house or do you leave it unlocked and open to the public? i always figured that a lock just kept out an ( if you will ) honest thief, who would otherwise take the opertunity to up his or her outdoor supplies with an unlocked door. i would appericate any thoughts on this depressing matter. THANK YOU!!! :-\

We always used to leave it open but took EVERYTHING out when we went home.

Used a portable heater and lantern, then took it all home with us.

Only problem we ever had was the neighbor kid parting in it when we were gone a few times.

Knew it was him because we followed the foot prints and puke trail to his door a few times.

When we upgraded to a better shack we started locking it.
Got broke in to once or twice but all that was there was the furnace and a few chairs.

With my old house the "albatros" I used to take all my stuff and leave it open. It never got broke into cause thedoor was open.

Cept one time I was fishing that evening and some friends were going to fish it in the AM. I left my buddies some stuff. You guessed it I left the door unlocked for buddies and the thieves fished in my house, smoked my cigarettes, left their beer cans and took all my stuff. Then proceded to a dozen other houses, breaking the doors down on everyone that was locked.

One house had a big pipe on the inside and outside with a rod going through them and the wall with a lock on it. Them thieves hooked onto that with a chain and drug the house a couple hundred yds with a truck and couldn't get the door off.

Now with the "school house" I thought about doing something like that too. The only problem is the windows are big enough that a person could crawl through when broke anyway.

So I'm just going to continue to take my stuff with me and leave it unlocked. They would use a truck to push or pull the door open anyhow and who wants to be fixing a fish shack at that time of yr.

the only thing I lock is my guns and that is in a gun safe. if they got enough ambition to haul that away, more power to 'em.

I came upon two hunting shacks one time, not far away from the other. the first one, had this great big master lock on the door, which by the way was kicked in and I thought, "that sucks".everything inside was topsy turvy.

then the second cabin, had no lock. instead, it had a sign on the outside that said, welcome to our hunting shack. we do not lock the door. please feel free to go inside and make yourself comfortable.
it is a nice shack, please leave it the way it was when you came.

we did indeed go inside, and it was a very nice cabin indeed. it looked as far as I could tell untouched.

from that day on, I had a new outlook on locking things.
if you lock it, there must be something valueable inside. can you say blue light special?
this is just an invite to kick the door in.
if its valuable and you cherrish it, take it home with you.

the guys that come up from the cities, lock everything. glove compartments, tailgates, spare tire.
they got key rings with about thirty keys on them.

I hate carrying big keyrings around in my pockets. drags my drawers down.

I am gonna have to agree with Jiggle on this one i believe if you dont lock it people arent really gonna mess around with it because they wont think there is anything of value in it. But still take all your most precious things with you that way you dont get them taken.

 My fish house and my hunting cabin are Private Property

 I have the right to lock them..I'm not for leaving them open so some meth head can have his way with his girl friend in my bed(disease) or cook his poision on my stove.

 Do you know where they have taken a leak or spit?

 Do you know what kind of disease some of these undesirables can carry? NOT GOOD!(TB, HEP, HIV just to name a few)

 It comes down to respect and up bringing

 I happen to like to have some things in my hunting cabin, along with making it look nice with good looking wood paneling and such.

 I'll take the risk of locking it

 Besides, any wise person wouldn't want to be caught in either place. The penalty would be severe and private between me and the intruder

 Sometimes the hard lessons are the best at teaching right and wrong very fast

 I have had a cabin for 4 or 5 years, it's always been locked and never had a problem...not one break in..cross my fingers

I am with jiggle all the way on this. There will always be that element of the human race that disreguards other's life and property no matter how you want to prevent it. But each needs to do what he is comfortable with. I have had plenty of stuff stolen both locked up and not.

Well I should have never chimed in on this one. 2 hours after I posted I locked my keys in the pickup in home depot parking lot. :o 30 minutes later I was 50 dollars poorer cause I let my AAA expire!
