A similar situation happened to us a few years ago fishing on Little Elk Lake west of Zimmerman. My buddy set a rod/reel in a holder and didn't open the bail.  A few minutes later..... CLANK and down the hole goes the rod/reel and the rod holder.  He decides to get even and throws a tip up in the same hole with a minnow for northern.  Not sure why but he did.  30 minutes later, flag goes up but there's no fish.... his rod/reel and tip up lines got tangled up and he's now hoisting the rod/reel back up through the hole along with a northern that pulled it all in.  No rod holder though....
