Griz, this one is for you.....

When you pack up shop and you have that big spear hole left do you mark it or just leave it as is?

Well to be totally honest I usually end up leaving my house over the hole for a few weeks with the intent on coming back. Then when I do get back I relocate the house as it's easier than cleaning out the old one inside the house.

If I do pull the house right away I'll mark it with a branch or something.

I appreciate people that mark the holes. I have not been on the ice in about 17 years now, ever since I went through an unmarked spearing hole in 15 ft deep water. While under the ice I could not see the hole to get out but I had 3 buddies with me that pulled me out. I aint been on the ice since. That was the second ice fishing mishap. The first was two weeks prior when a buddie and I planned on an ice fishing all nighter and ended up rolling his Bronco that day putting us in the hospital. Apparently I am not meant to go ice fishing LOL.

Faceman,

That must of been extremely scary!  First, being in freezing water.  Second, not being able to see the hole while you were under.  I'm glad your buddies were there for you!  I think that would keep me off the ice too.

I'll tell ya what...Nothing ticks me off more than some spear fisherman putting their ice blocks on top the ice and leaving them there.

I'm a snowmobilier and I have speared through the ice too.

If you ever hit one of those blocks of ice under deep snow or in the dark..it's not good and a person could be killed from hitting them

I mark the hole with balsum branches and I have even took my splitting maul out and busted up blocks I have run acoss on the lake.

Each sportsman should respect the safety of other sportsman..making sure you don't leave something on the ice that could hurt or kill someones father, sone, daughter, mother or other

Do your part, even if you see a hole or blocks of ice that are not yours. if you can, do what you can to mark a hole or bust up blocks left by others. The life you save, might be someone you know

I don't understand why people pull the blocks out in the first place. I've been in many discussions about it. Most of them that pull it out believe that it scares fish. I think it's a bunch of hogwash as i've seen nearly 40 fish in one day and I've never pulled a block of ice outta the hole in my life. The only legitimate reason I've heard for a perspon doing it was pointed out to me by an older fellow. He put it in his house on windy days to help hold it in place with the extra weight.
