Boat fire

So today I had a Boat fire,,,,


so what would cause  this to catch fire? This was the only thing that seem to be toast<,


I just took it off the motor to night,

I do believe it the coil, Why would it shorted out, There was overload?

It was running fine out, And I was back tronning I did think I smelt something, But it was still running as I headed back it would not get up and move, So I just took my time back, When I got to the dock I turn it off and It stared to smoke so I took the cover off and seen the fire, I put it out and took the positive off the battery,

Hmm should I tell you what happend???

What probobly happend is 2 wires were wore down and they touched metal to metal with the vibration and caused a little smoke and slowly chewed on the plastic untell they held together long enough to just constantly touch if you would of caught it right when u smelt it you may have been able to fix it with a little electrical tape

  to hear about your bad luck. I know exactly how your feeling having had a similar incident happen last year to my Yamaha. Mine was the voltage regulator burnt up. Dealer blamed it on the powerful dry cell (cabela's) battery.  They stated that the charging system of the Yamaha was not compatible with the Cabela's dry cell battery. When the voltage regulator was replaced they also replaced the battery with their own wet cell battery.

I asked if the original battery was bad and they said it was ok but not compatible with the Yamaha charging system. I had that battery in the boat for 4 years without any prior problems.  Anyhow, I hope you won't be out of service for to long. It's just like having a member of the family being ill.

The battery was new, I may have 30 to 40 hours on it, I had got a new one this spring, and back on 9-30 it was dead It would not take a charge, so I took it back and they gave me a new one, L&M fleet is wear I got it, I will be stopping at the boat shop today to see if I can get a new one, I just hope it did not   the motor up!!! I do not have a inboard charging system in my boat,

Dose any one know what It would cost? about  

The bad thing is the eye where biting good and I want to keep  :fishing2:

Your motor should be fine im guessing mechanically at least.  If you work on it your self make sure to check over any wires that could have been damaged by the fire hard to see from the pictures.  As far as cost is hard to tell with out knowing the Make, model and year of motor.  Dont think is should be to bad though.

it look like most of the damaged was just to this part but I will look at all the wires, as to the motor is a 30hp 2003 Mercury model 0t756018 4strok

I dont think it is the coils I'm thinking it is the voltage regulator.  This is for 2 reasons ....1 im assuming that in your second set of picture the burnt up part was removed and you can still see the coils on the back of the motor...2 did a little googling i have found forums with people with the same motor  that have had voltage regulators burn up.

You are right on it is the voltage regulator, I just stop at the dealer and he said they have been making this voltage regulator back to the 80s the only thing they change is the wires ends the cost of a new one 151.00  and three days before it come

Well it will be 300.00 as the kit is 191.00 plus 90.00 in labor     But with the service bulletin ( recall) that you sent me it expire 9-30-2005 but I call mercury mariner and he told me if I can prove that I was the original owner ( witch I can) they will cover it!!!  Thank you!!!! I will post update

Why mercury is going to fix at no cost   Even know it is not under a warranty That said a lot in my book, I have had this scent 2003 that all most ten years and this is my first thing to go wrong,

Beside I paid 0 for it in the fist place, Lund boat gave it to me the boat motor trailer and I put the hours on the lakes

No problem gave me something to do that day.  Just started a new job as a Field Engineer so i went from working out side to sitting in an office for the most part.  And i use to work at a marina years ago so it sparked my interest. Besides that always nice to Help a fellow MNOer

   Good news.  Now get back on the lake and rustle us up a 40' pike.    We have a contest to win.  I only have one more chance at it.  After this weekend I am probably done.  The docks are all pulled and the access docks may be gone by now.

What would make you think that the docks are still in up here? Because there not, but then I do not need a dock    As to us winning last time I look we are  Now i think you need to get out there and fine your own 40+ pike  By the way as it look we all have just this last weekend then it over

Ya ya ya....I had a bad year. I didn't catch anything big enough to score compared to you guys and I just got my boat back a week ago from having the axle worked on. If we win anything I'll forfit to you guys, my two wonderful team mates!
