:reporter; ......Rochester crusade against crows to begin Monday

Rochester crows beware: Efforts to drive you out begin at 4 p.m. Monday.

The city has hired wildlife biologists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to rid Rochester of the estimated 15,000 to 20,000 crows that winter downtown, soiling sidewalks, parking lots, streets and buildings with their droppings.

The hazing techniques that will be used to scare the crows out of downtown and, according to the city's goal, out of Rochester were described Friday in a USDA news release. They include laser lights, pyrotechnics and amplified recordings of crow distress calls, and some of the measures could be confused at times with flashing lights and sirens of emergency vehicles, according to the USDA's Wildlife Services division.

The crow abatement workers will wear high-visibility reflective vests and driving vehicles with flashing amber beacons. They will work with city officials and the police department.

The crews will work throughout the city from 4 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. for up to five consecutive nights. They might continue with follow-up hazing sessions through March.

Residents can help with the efforts by reporting large groups of crows that might start roosting in other areas of the city once they are dispersed from downtown, the USDA said.
