The unofficial Challenge Chatter String

This string is for all chatter in regards to the 2013 Fishing Challenge that have nothing to do with name calling, Clint Eastwood or the Duke, how many titles Wild has or red pens. This string will be here for the 90% of fishermen in the Challenge who just want to talk fishing. What's biting, water temps, ice out fishing trips planned. New rods bought or secret lakes that you may or may not want to talk about. I know there are a lot of people who are lurking, here is a place for you to start chatting.  Since this is not a Smack thread please no smack here.

Good luck with the motor wild. First time you get some nice weather hook up the muffs and garden hose and let her rip for a while. After opening day everyone and their grandma will be waiting in line for marine service.

I'd like to get back to the Puddle Humper but I would have to put on snow shoes! Across the lake here steelhead opens this weekend, if we get  the rain as forecasted there will be some water in the river! Six weeks to opener, a lot of ice and a lot of snow needs to melt..  :campfire:  Before you know it HD will be in my neighborhood  :fishing2:

I bought a couple a YUMbrella Rigs this winter. They are the 3 wire ones and legal in Wisconsin. I hope I give them enough of a fair chance before pulling the plug on um. I bet they would work in MN. but, that's a no no.

THE ONLY PLACE I have seen them is thorne bros. and they pretty much only have them for ice fishing. the guy said they don't cast because of the way the spool is designed. they range from 435 TO 450. depending on which one you get..........WAYYYYYYYY worth the price in my opinion!!!

Chatting on the phone last night with my buddy Chuck about fishing destinations for this season. I live in kind of a no man's land as I have a variety of fish in my back yard to chase but I am just a little ways short of being in great fishing waters. I live on the northern boundary of good largemouth bass fishing but fish are bigger south of me. I live on the southern edge of smallmouth but the trophy waters are still north of me. I do have trophy water for salmon and trout in my back yard along with some really good musky waters. My problem like everyone else is water that would take a twenty dollar bill to get too now takes forty dollars in gas. Once a week no big deal but when you are retired I now have more time to fish but less money to buy gas. I don't travel as far as Lee does to fish walleye and bass but he drives right past my house to travel another  hundred miles to his golden fishing spot. So my question is how far do you travel to your golden spot and how many times a year can you get to it?

I have 170 miles one way to go on weekends.  I go to my folks place on the Lake of No fish.  I go as often on weekends as I can.  That usually means once or twice a month.  I leave my boat there so I can't do any local fishing.  From there it is an hour drive to get to Leech.  I have not been able to get there for a few years.  I hope to make it there this summer.  The lake of No Fish is a tough nut to crack but it does give up a true trophy once in a great while.  :fishing2:  For the holiday weekends I get a couple of extra days but the fishing is usually pretty poor due to the wave runners and water skiers which is fine.  I just go out real early and late to avoid all the commotion.

Bobby lots of people ask me when U going to retire???  The answer is .... not as long as I can see and not senile....thats why I can go fishing a longways away frequently...kids are long gone, so its most weekends Ill go somewhere where its good fishing.  Its about 300  miles to my cabin in Mn on Leech.  But there is some good fishing in ND this year, Sakajawea should be hot for both big walleyes and Northerns as well as smallmouth bass.  Im not much of a bass fisherman but do like toothy things like muskie and Northerns..  Devils lake is also a hot spot for nice Northerns and walleyes.  For me its every weekend as long as the wifey doesn't have me going to a wedding or something... ( there are 3 weddings I have to go to this summer)  Oh yeah have to have a weekend for ROCKBASSN in there somewhere..

Equipment news:  :cheerleader: Been waiting to pull the trigger on a new Falcon rod to match up with my Quantum PT that I bought last year. Yesterday I found a Vendetta rod at Walmart on clearance, 30 bucks off. So it came home with me. I was watching the Vendetta rods last season and almost bought one but now at 49 bucks that's a pretty good deal. Besides now the wife thinks I have bought my new rod for the year and should not notice when the Falcon arrives in the mail.. Of course if they mark the Vendetta down another fifteen bucks I might have to buy another.  :whistling:

If it's ice fishing I've got about 85 feet from my back door to the ice. If it's open water I have about that same distance to my dock plus another 60 feet down the dock to get in the boat on the boat lift. Can go just about anytime I want being I'm retired. Unless the wife has plans for us to go somewhere. There is also the chores list that gets in the way sometimes. :fishing:

39 days till opener. Started looking over the boat do list, always seems to be something that I didn't get around to doing last fall but did remember to write down. Have to fix or replace the loading light on the trailer that stopped working and time to finally replace the trailer third wheel that is no longer round but flat from sliding in on the ground. It seize a few seasons back. Of course I still have snow and ice around the boat house so I can't actually get to the trailer yet. But I am thinking about it and I am still shopping the Internet for the best price on my new Falcon rod that I have yet to actually buy...  :whistling:

Your post reminded me of one of my to do's.  Last fall on my trip to Orr as I was loading up I found out someone had shot out both my trailer lights.  I did not have time to fix them then so I replaced the bulbs and used red handkerchiefs duct taped over what was left of the lenses as a quick fix.  Made it to Orr and back.  I have to replace those lights this spring.  :banghead:

getting ur lights shot out sounds like a personal thing, girl friend, wife, x wife, soon to be x wife  :whistling:   not that it don't happen. Had some yahoo let the air out of my trailer tires out in the middle of no where once. Lucky for me I had one of them mini air compressors.

Nothing personal.  The trailer is parked way back in woods the across the road from the cabin.  I'm pretty sure it was the neighbor kid.  They lived there year around.  I would see him roaming around back there from time to time.  I can't say for sure but that is my hunch.  My p$$ bottle I left on my deer stand was peppered with holes too.  Fortunately they moved.   I wasn't to worried the lights were getting pretty beat up and were going to need to be replaced pretty soon anyways.  I was however miffed at the timing.

And here I thought with your reputation it was going to involve moon shine, the sheriffs and a moon less night with some Johnny Cash music on your eight track player.  :police:
