Using the weather to your advantage (1/8)

I am starting to think I can predict the fishing results better then the weathermen can predict the weather.  After taking a quick look at the pressure at GameTraxx I didn’t like what I saw. 

What I saw was the pressure dropped on Saturday (12/30) before the storm came in, we were out fishing the fish were pretty active, Tuesday (1/2) – Thursday (1/4) the pressure was dropping and the reports were pretty good but now Friday and Saturday the pressure (and winds) was on the rise, so I expected nothing much for fishing, and if we found fish it was going to be SLOW and [SIZE="1"]SMALL[/SIZE] well here is what we found…

After a quick stop in at Rockman’s place (we beat him there @ 6Am) on Sunday (1/7) we headed out to his first flat (17ft – 21ft) because we wanted to hit the shallower water up for the sunrise bite.  Andy got the first line down and missed the fish 2 seconds in.  Little did he know he wouldn’t have very many other chances on the day.

We had fish on the LX-3 all day but they would just come in a sniff it.  After the sun came up we put down the camera and within minutes the fish scattered and we didn’t see anything (reminder to self put the SOS weeds on the camera).  We brought the camera up and they came back.  A few boarder lined perch and 12” walleyes (released) fell victim to my Hali (NilsMaster) Slender Jig and 2” dropper and small fathead head.  After getting shut out for the first 3 hours and going through everything in his box put a Hali Jig on and pulled his one and only fish for the day a small walleye. 

I changed up to a copper / gold jigging spoon and minnow head.  Saw a nice mark on the LX-3 and pulled up a perfect 18” eater walleye.  Put that on the ice and dropped it down again and pulled up a nice fat 11” Jumbo.  It seemed bigger then it was because it had a fat old belly on it.  What I found best to work is jigging then letting the dropper slowly sink (VERY VERY SLOW) to the bottom, they would hit it after it was sitting on the bottom (rock / mud) for a few seconds.  Loved the LX-3 ZOOM for this feature.

We never moved because we always had fish on the flasher, plus the wind was pretty nasty after 10AM.  We dropped the camera down a few more times (the fish didn’t mind it this time) and we would see them sitting right next to it sniffing the presentations.  You tried everything and all they would do is sit there and sniff it.  I did get a few more small walleyes (GREAT FUTURE) including one that came from off the screen 4 times to ATTACK the spoon (NOT THE DROPPER).  Finally I dropped a jigging spoon with no dropper and timed the hook set right and brought it up through the hole. 

After my big shiner tangled 3 of the 4 poles and Andy yanking my line with his rod causing me to think I had a MONSTER on we decided to hang it up and head home, but not before Andy got introduced to the Rockman’s cheeseburger.
