Barring any unforeseen 'blow-ups' at the house here, I'll be heading to Grindstone Lake this weekend for some Rainbows/Browns/Lakers and then of course trying for some of them 12" smelt through the ice. Reported ice conditions sound good but haven't heard any reports on fishing yet. Its one of the last lakes to freeze, so the middle is always a stressful crossing. This lake is one of the most intriguing lakes I've fished. It is close enough to enjoy but far enough to keep people at bay. The range of fish available is staggering as well as its depth. I've spoken to people who used to dive this lake and the said there are huge fish here, one of which swore he wouldn't ever set foot in it again after seeing a tail fin almost 2ft in width. The structure is reminiscent of the lakes up north with steep breaks, points, humps and flats. I'll be bringing along DDS's lures which worked well the last time for Bows and Smelt. I'll be using tip-up's for the Lakers/Browns and possible Nord's. I'm excited!! :dancinred: ;D

I agree, what do you use for bait? Tip the ATI's with waxworms?  Never fished for trout thru the ice..

I'll use either waxies or crappie minnows for the bows, suckers/shiners for the lakers/browns/Nords and either waxies or minnow heads for the smelt. There are also large and small mouth bass here, sunnies, crappies and sturgeon... love this since you have no idea what might come up the hole.

ATI's have done well and also a good ole swede pimple tipped also..

I'll take some pics if I get anything worth sharing.
