Walleye season opens this weekend on May 10th! Open water looking good for the bite. Sturgeon anglers reporting strong numbers of walleyes in the Rainy River and 4 Mile Bay hitting sturgeon rigs.  Resorts still have some openings for opening weekend. Pike fishing good along weed beds and dock areas on river banks. Zippel Bay and 4 Mile bay good with spoons or rigs with dead bait and smelt.  Big post spawn pike 40"+ in good numbers.

On the Rainy River, sturgeon keep season ends May 7th, with catch and release open until May 15 then reopens in June. Fish easy to find, lots of bigger fish in deep pockets. Use 5/0 circle hooks and 4-5 oz no roll sinker baited with mix of crawlers and frozen shiners.

Ice is out a few miles past Lighthouse Gap past Pine Island. North wind pushed some ice in but looking promising for opener this weekend. Also open out past Zippel Bay and moving west. Plenty of open lake and river fishing available for opener.  More info at www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com
