I have a garmin map 76s hand held GPS
I would like to know what I can down load onto it to have accurate depth charts for the lakes local to me, like from mille lacs to lake of the woods and from duluth to the red river valley. maybe into canada as well.
I have looked at some online at the garmin site but i got confused.
it seemed to me that  the information was allready in my GPS, I just needed to purchase a code to unlock it?

does anybody else run one of these and what kind of mapping products do you use?

Dave,

I had the same exact GPS last year, until I sold it and bought a Lowrance H2oc.

I still have the Garmin maps, both lakes and streets. I used 1 unlock code and it still has another code left that is unused.

Can't think of the names of the software maps right now, but I paid $129 for each of them.

Does that unit have 8mb or 24 mb of usable memory, I forget.

Anyways, you need to purchase the additional maps to answer your question.

The Garmin Map 76s comes with basic mapping. As far as accurate and additional maps, you need to purchase the seperate discs. That is where you have to unlock the maps onto your computer and transfer all or part of the maps you are looking for. Your GPS has such low memory, that you'll have to only download what you need at that time, I purchased all of Mn, region, which has parts of Canada, Western Wis, Northern Iowa, and parts of the dakotas. The only bad thing is you will have to keep adding or deleting certain maps as you use or need them. But it works.

Much easier to explain on the phone. I am very familiar with this.

Did you find the adapter cord anywhere yet, you'll probably have to order directly from Garmin.

It seems most sporting goods stores are always out of the usb adapters and brackets when you need them. ???

Once you get the new cord, I'll set you up with the 2 discs.

Check ebay for the cords.  They typically go for about a 1/3 the cost of retail there!  Just watch the shipping price as usual!

I talked to jiggle this afternoon, he is up on Red Lake today, he needs the cord for a Garmin GPS MAP76s, to hook up to the deskto, if you see one, let him know.

I''ll search for the part # on Garmins site. Once he gets the cord, he will be able to use my extra lakemaps for himself. What a deal..... ;D

                                 PC Interface Cable

This cable allows you to make a powerful connection between your GPS and your PC. Create routes and waypoints on your PC and transfer them to your GPS. You can also download map detail from MapSource CD-ROMs to compatible units. Cable features a standard 9-pin D connector. Does not provide wiring for external power.
