We fished Friday - Sunday.  Went out of Hillman's  6-7 miles.  The bridge was out for a time on Friday so we took a round about way to get out there.  The ice is in great shape, just look for the rough spots and go slow so you don't bend the spindles on on the house.  Fishing was okay for January.  We picked up a few each day and ended up with 14 crappies and 4 keeper walleyes for the two of us.  There was never a pattern.  Twice my buddy saw one on the vex as soon as we got up in the morning around 5:00 a.m., put his line down and bang - fish on.  We caught some fish at 5:00 a.m. some at noon, 2:00 p.m. and a shot flurry one night between 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.  We probably missed another 4-5 crappies.  We started out on the south side of the group the first night (mushy bottom).  The next day we moved a little North and the bottom was a little less mushy.  The last day we moved across the road and no one was close to us but the bottom was harder with just a little bit of give.  We did catch some crappies but also more walleye and a few perch.  We were too far north of the transition area I am thinking and should have stayed where we were at on the first or second day but moved either west or east.

The weather was cold.  We put out the weed the first night and I couldn't say if they helped or not.  We caught some crappies but I suspect we would have caught them anyway as we were in a fishy area.  The next morning we had to chisel out the weed bobbers as  5-6 inches of ice had formed in the holes.  That wasn't much fun so we didn't use them the rest of the trip.  I would use them again but only when the weather is warmer so you don't have to spend so much time chiseling them out the next day.  You could set them up in the house but with a 6 hole house for two guys you could only use two holes for the weeds.  The glow demons with the red stripe or red dot seemed to work the best but we also caught a few on a black/silver glow jig with a red eye.  I am heading back up this weekend so we will see what happens.  The bite was better the previous week with the warmer weather so maybe the cold weather put a slight damper on things although some people caught limits I am sure.

A note of caution:  Check the air pressure on your vehicle and house tires.  On the way back between Washkish and Kelliher I noticed a lot of play in my steering wheel and the vehicle seemed to sway a little.  When we stopped for gas at Kelliher I looked underneath to see if I had a broken tie-rod or something else and then noticed that my rear tire on the passenger side was almost flat.  We filled it back up with air and then went across the street to a garage where they checked it for leaks but couldn't find anything.  With all this cold weather you want to make sure you have the proper inflation in your tires so you don't have bad things happen.  This could have been a serious situation out on the open road.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant - and not nearly as much fun.? Robert Traver "Anatomy of a Fisherman"
