LAKE MINNETONKA AREA

Most people shot a few ducks opening morning, but reports have been limited since.

Northern pike and bass can be had with crankbaits on the weedlines of Green Lake and Lake Phalen. Walleyes are hitting minnows in 13 to 16 feet on North Center Lake and in 10 to 12 feet on South Center Lake. Northern pike and bass are an easy catch with spinnerbaits along the weedlines of most lakes.

Smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing has been very good on most lakes, and crappies have been hitting on White Iron over 26 to 28 feet. Grouse hunting reports have been poor, but should improve as more leaves drop.

 The Great Outdoors   (218) 365-4744

LAKE MILLE LACS

East - Anglers are finding numbers of small walleyes on the 16- to 22-foot sand during the day. Look for the trolling bite at night to start picking up on the rock reefs and points with the next full moon. Muskie activity has improved on the shallow rocks, smallmouth bass remain an easy catch, and there are some good-sized perch being caught on the 16- to 18-foot rocks.

Johnson’s Portside (320) 676-3811

West - The tops and sides of the mud flats continue to give up walleyes at night on slip bobbers and leeches. During the day, a jig and minnow is producing a few walleyes on the shoreline rocks and weedlines. Look for perch close to shore or on the flats, smallmouth bass in 10 to 16 feet, and northern pike in 9 to 13 feet in most bays.

At the Northwest Angle, jigging with frozen shiners has worked best for walleyes in 18 to 24 feet at Oak Island. On the Ontario side, walleyes are going in 24 to 28 feet, crappie action has picked up, and muskies are going on the rocks.

Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau (800) 382-FISH

Pike Bay Lodge (218) 753-2430

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

Northern pike and perch are being caught along the 8- to 12-foot weedlines off Mallard Point, Raven’s Point, Rich’s Townsite, and the mouth of the river. Walleyes can be had with a jig and minnow or crankbaits on the 6- to 12-foot breaks along the shorelines and points. Duck hunters have done well in the river and bays off the main lake.

LEECH LAKE

Perch action has picked up in 6 to 9 feet in front of GrandVu, Sand Point and the Narrows. Walleyes are hitting a jig and minnow in 6 to 12 feet at Goose Island, the Hardwoods, Duck Points and Meadows. The humps in Walker Bay and Cedar Point also are producing walleyes in deeper water. Loon’s Nest (218) 286-5850

RED LAKE

Minnows and crankbaits are producing walleyes along most shorelines in 4 to 7 feet. Grouse hunting has been good despite thick cover, and waterfowl hunters are shooting mostly local birds.

Look for crappies in 9 feet on Kitchi Lake, Wolf Lake and Allen’s Bay on Cass. Allen’s Bay also is giving up bluegills in 6 feet. Perch action has been best around Cedar Island on Cass. There seems to be good numbers of ducks and geese in the area, but the warm, bright weather on opening day kept them flying high after the first hour of shooting.

CROSBY AREA

A minnow and jig is turning crappies and walleyes at Clearwater Lake in 30 to 40 feet and walleyes at Rabbit Lake in 22 to 28 feet. Trolling big jerk baits and bucktails along the tree edges at Portsmouth Pit and Sagamore Pit has produced northern pike. Serpent Lake and Rabbit are kicking out largemouth bass in 20 to 25 feet on plastics. The duck opener was good for some groups and poor for others with mallards, wood ducks and blue-winged teal in most bags. The leaves have really dropped so grouse hunting reports have improved north and west of the area.
