  Walleye, steelhead trout a delight for local anglers

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The weather continues to cooperate for Lake Erie walleye fishermen, and for steelhead trout anglers prowling the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams. The daytime walleye fishing has been fair to good around the Huron area, while the walleye fishing has sparkled many nights from the Lake Erie Islands all the way to Grand River.

Southerly winds should benefit the night walleye fishermen the next couple of days. The steelhead rivers are all in good shape but rain is in the forecast. Light rains would be beneficial, luring more trout into the rivers, but heavy rains could kick up river levels over the weekend and make fishing difficult.

CLEVELAND AREA

Shoreline fishermen are picking off fair numbers of walleye while casting from the piers and breakwalls of Cleveland Harbor. The best fishing has been after dark for both shoreline anglers and boat fishermen, with large Rapala Husky Jerk lures a mainstay at this time of year.



LAKE ERIE

Walleye have been moving to near-shore areas after dark in large numbers to feed on schools of temperature-sensitive gizzard shad. Most shoreline anglers are casting the large No. 14 and No. 18 Rapala Husky Jerk lures, as well as Smithwick Perfect 10 and other minnow-style plugs, while trolling fishermen are putting out shallow-running diving plugs.

The hot spots continue to be the harbor areas, which includes Grand River, the Eastlake power plant wall, Cleveland, Lorain, Vermilion, Huron and the Lakeside Pier on the Marblehead Peninsula.

The daytime trolling for walleye can't match the night bite, with the good fishing generally limited to the Huron-Vermilion area.

The Lake Erie harbor areas have been good for crappie. Fishermen have been suspending small jigs and minnows under a float and working the boat docks and shoreline structure. East Harbor, West Harbor and the Sandusky Bay area have been crappie hot spots.

Erie's limit is 6 fish and the only slot they have is 15" minimum. But I 100% agreed that's bs

   I too have a hard time watching that.  Keeping one for the wall is one thing.

  That's probably why the slot is the way it is.  If they are going to do it so should we.      That logic has always ruined fisheries.
