so that gun that was found in arizona got me thinking a bit.  what would you do if you found a gun?

the scenario.. driving out of your hunting spot you see a gun case on the side of the trail, no tracks around it, so it's clearly been there since at least the last storm. you stop grab it and inside is a gun.. nothing special (to you) approximate value is around 350$. so your not getting rich off of this and your family isn't starving.    what do you do???

also.. what do you do if you lose the gun? you get home and realize that you leaned the gun up against the closest tree you could find and  in a rush to load up drove off without it.. 6 hours one way to drive back and get it and it's sunday night and you work the next day? no one you know lives close enough to go find it.. How do you deal with this?

i look forward to the responses...

If I found a gun against a tree, and I had no clue who it belonged to - I would keep it.  There would be no way of me tracking down who it belonged to.  Perhaps I would then leave a note pegged to the tree, that I found the gun and leave my cell phone #.  If they can describe it - I will return it.

In response to leaving my gun against a tree, I would call in sick on Monday and drive up in the morning.  6hours to drive probably isn't worth my time, but I wouldn't want someone else to find the gun that shouldn't have it.  Too much would be going thru my mind knowing there is a gun just sitting out for the world to take.  If it gets in the wrong hands, I couldn't sleep at night.

(by the way, I didn't read the article about AZ, so I will do that now).  Interesting predicament.

this took a little thinkin to reply to!!

in regards to finding a gun I think I would try to find the owner thru law enforcement.

here is the tricky one that required some thought. leaving my gun in the woods or anyone else for that matter. I would wonder if that person really should be out in the woods. really???? he is out hunting and loses or forgets his gun!!!!!!   :doah: :doah: :doah:

I guess I would contact local law enforcement and newspaper to see if anyone would be to describe said firearm and give it back to them. No reply, wait six months and call it my own.

If this is my firearm left behind I would have to drive back to get it.

I have a co-worker that did leave a shotgun leaning against his pick-up while peasant hunting, drove off and forgot about it. Local county maint. operator came by it a day or two later while grading the road and pick it up. Through word of mouth the firearm found it's way home. Lucky.

interesting replies guys..

I would take the next day off and go fetch my gun. no question about it.  but if you showed up and it was already gone? then what ?? do you report it stolen/lost to the local PD

if you found it and kept it (even after 6 months) would you worry that it was reported stolen? maybe the guy that forgot it thought someone took it at the gas station and reported it stolen? would you feel comfortable using that gun? (or give it to the brother in law you don't like)

I would guess when I brought it to the police station they would do a check on it to see if it had been reported stolen or what ever they do.  Once that was done and they either keep the gun or give it to me I'm not worried from then on.  However since it's not a Browning automatic I'd probably just sell it somewhere down the road.

Id tirn it in to law enforcment.  I ould turn aromd and go get my gun.
i had a freind once who owned an ford bob cat wagon type car. Very short car. He left his shot on top of the car while doing things and we drove away and right around fifty mph we heard this shhhhhhhhuuuup and we look behind and his gun is summersaulting down the road. Oddly enough just a few scatches. Next day we were bow hunting and he did it again, same thing left it on top of his car and we watched it summer sault down the road. I laughd out a rib. Probably the funniest mmemory of my mind alterd youth.

boar your tumblin gun story made me think of this.

my brothers and I were at a sporting clays club a few years back. a golf cart came wizzzzzing by us on the trail.. behind it they were dragging what looked like a browning citori over and under... even though they were driving like buttheads.. we hollered for them to stop and they were dragging a gun but they kept driving.

I had a similar situation happen to me.  While on vacation with the family up near Remer we were at the beach.  We talked to a couple that also had their kids at the beach and after a few hours the other husband says that his wedding ring was missing and must have fallen off in the lake.  We all searched for a while to no avail.  The next day we were at the beach and one of the kids brought me the ring.(found it while snorkeling)    We have left contact info at the beach the rest of the summer and they never called.  Still have the ring on a nail at the cabin.  Never know when we will see them again. They have family in the area but we don't remember their names.

Jerry im trying real hard to find the similarity in that story, guns and bows falling of cartops and draged behind golf cars VS Lost wedding ring while snokrling. i cant see it.

The guy lost something of value to him.  I could have pawned it for a few dollars but tried to find him and return it.  Kind of like losing a gun.  If I found a gun I would try and find the owner as well.

If I left a gun out in the woods I would call in sick and go and get it that minute.

suppose that ring guy could have claimed it on his insurance and just didn't give it a second thought.

It was just a plain gold band.  Not to expensive just sentimental value.
