An 8-year-old boy and three adults were rescued from an icy lake near Iron River on Tuesday after the child fell through the ice to trying help a struggling dog and the three adults each tried, in turn, to help the boy.

The Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday that several agencies responded to a 911 report that someone had fallen through the ice on Spider Lake at about 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office reported that an initial investigation showed that after the boy entered the water to aid a struggling dog, the boy’s father went into the lake to help his son. Then the boy’s mother entered the water, and finally a neighbor went into the water to help and started having trouble hanging on to the small boat he used to help swim.

The wife of the neighbor called 911, and Iron River Fire Department personnel pulled the four people from the water. They were in the water for less than a half-hour, authorities said.

The four were treated for hypothermia and transported to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth, the sheriff’s office reported. Their injuries were non-life-threatening and they were released from the hospital Tuesday night. The 911 caller was treated for an asthma attack, authorities said. Information on the status of the dog was not available.
