Yesterday a very close friend on mine called and said her dog had started to have pups. 5 hours later she still had only 1 pup so administered oxytosin(this helps the female contract) a dead pup came. 1/2 hr later she gave oxy again another pup barely alive came. She rushed the pup and female to the vet had a c-section and out of 6 pups she has 2 alive. I have had things go terribly wrong in a litter before so know how tuff this is for her. She said her female Chesapeake will be ok.

Another reason I will be spaying my femal lab as soon as the vet gets an opening.

I thought long and hard about letting her have a litter, but after reading up on welping and things that can go wrong I decided to just get it over with and not have to watch her every time she goes out side.

Too bad your friend lost the pups, maybe they will have better luck next time.

Well things happen in life.  Weddings, births, getting a new dog, etc.. but also some not so pleasant things like a family member or your dog dieing.  For example, I help the ducks by giving them a place to stay (Mallard hen nests and Woodies boxes), and yet I also harvest ducks and geese in the Fall.  Life and death is the natural cycle of life, like it or not, so best to have good attitude about it.
I hope she is doing better now that it is a few weeks later.
God, help me be the man that my dog thinks I am.

Fix your dog and tell your friends to fix their dogs. Terrible what happened, but could be prevented. Fix your dog. Fix your dog. Fix your dog!

Firt of all guythathunts She is a breeder. She just had one of those bad things that happen. I too am a breeder of 24yrs. I just felt bad for her that day. If she was not a breeder I'm sure she would have >:(

I understand. Situations like this do happen to non-breeders with non-breeder grade dogs every day though. People don't understand they are helping their pup by having them fixed. No matter what our ego tells us our dog doesn't lose it's man or womanhood when they are fixed. It is safe for your pets and can help them live a happy healthy life! As for your friend... my sympathies.
