This weekend was a two lake fishing trip. We started at Black Duck in the morning for perch, and ended the day on Upper Red for walleye.

The perch bite was fair on Black Duck. It was fair to good on Friday morning. We took mainly large females. On Saturday the bite slowed down considerably. The wind was blowing from 10 to 25 mph. It was a challenge to keep the portables on the ice. We mainly caught male perch on Saturday. The six of us caught maybe 65 fish in two days.

The walleye bite on Red is still pretty strong. We fished in 8-10 fow. Jigging for walleye was fair to poor. They really were not interested. The best luck was on tip ups. We had strong action on the tip ups all afternoon to dusk. We were using large golden shiners 1.5 feet off the bottom on a single hook. We had 10 keepers the first day. We arrived on the lake at 4:00. The second day we limited out about an hour after dark.

The ice was getting close to 30 inches. There is little snow cover on the South Shore. If you find a snow drift, you will be able to bank the houses. The ice should be pretty slippery the first part of this week with the warmer temperatures.

Red jigs were working the best for walleye and crappie. The crappie bite is picking up in 13 fow, and about 2.5 to 3 miles off shore.

We have cabin and day house openings the next two weekends.
