Smallmouth bass can be had on the rock reefs with slip bobbers and leeches, tube jigs, or crankbaits. The wind has limited muskie anglers from fishing effectively, but some pike continue to be caught on crankbaits or minnows along the weedlines in most bays.

Limits of walleyes and sauger are being caught on spinners and crawlers at Morris Point, Long Point, Graceton, and Zippel Bay in 5 to 15 feet or 23 to 27 feet. Crankbaits are turning walleyes in 31 to 34 feet out from Lighthouse Gap, Garden Island, near Long Point, and in various spots throughout the Big Traverse basin. On the Rainy River, sturgeon continue to be caught at Clementson and Birchdale with 3-ounce sinkers, 5/0 circle hooks, and gobs of minnows or crawlers. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes are being found in 24 to 30 feet off Crow Duck, Four Blocks, and Little Oak islands. North Island and Falcon Island on the Ontario side are producing walleyes and crappies and large crankbaits are turning muskies and pike on the shorelines.

Muskie action has picked up with bucktails and topwater baits on the middepth weedlines of Lake Independence and Lake Minnetonka. Bass and pike continue to be taken with spinnerbaits on the 12- to 16-foot weedlines of Minnetonka, Medicine Lake, and Lake Sarah. Crappies are suspended on the outside weed edges and sunfish are right in the weeds on Minnetonka.

LAKE VERMILION
Walleyes are being taken with leadcore and crankbaits in the deep-basin areas of the main lake or with crawlers and Lindy Rigs on the reef and rock pile edges in 25 to 35 feet. Muskie action has been very good on the weedlines and rock reefs throughout the lake, while smallmouth bass are hitting tubes or crankbaits on the shoreline rocks.

Walleyes are hitting spinners and crawlers during the day and crankbaits in the evening hours on the main-lake bars and flats in 12 to 16 feet. The shallow weeds are now the best option for bigger perch, but you will have to sort through some small fish. Spoons or crankbaits are turning northern pike in the 10- to 12-foot weeds.

Perch have started showing up in the Narrows over 7 feet of water, but you have to sort through quite a few small fish. Walleye reports have been very limited this week due to the wind, but crankbaits remain the best option in 9 to 12 feet on the main-lake points and structure. RAINY LAKE
Troll the Rat Root River with minnows or the lift bridge by Reinier for walleyes. Some of the reefs in Sand Bay continue to produce walleyes in 25 to 30 feet as well. Crankbaits have been the ticket for smallmouth bass on the rock points and shorelines. Bear baiting reports have been mixed and some areas have a better raspberry crop than initially expected.

Strong winds have limited fishing opportunities throughout the past week. Once the wind calms, go back to the same areas for walleyes – 11- to 13-foot rocks or 4- to 7-foot breaks. Jigs and minnows, spinners, and crankbaits will produce fish.

NORTHEAST METRO
Spinnerbaits or sucker minnows are producing pike and bass on Lake Phalen. Work the weedlines of Big Carnelian Lake, Square Lake, and White Bear Lake for largemouth bass and the St. Croix River for smallmouth. Crappies and sunfish are hitting in 10 to 12 feet at Phalen, White Bear, Forest Lake, and Centerville Lake. Muskie fishing has generally been good on the weedlines of area lakes with bucktails or plastics and the St. Croix is giving up a few walleyes.

Walleyes and catfish are hitting on the Minnesota River in the Sand Creek area in Carver or down toward Chaska. Hit Lake Ann and Steiger Lake for largemouth bass, while spinnerbaits or sucker minnows are producing pike on the weedlines of Steiger and Lake Minnewashta.

ALEXANDRIA AREA
Crawlers or minnows are producing a few walleyes in 12 to 18 feet on Lake Miltona and Reno Lake – some fish are hitting crankbaits in shallower water at night. Crappie reports remain favorable off the 12- to 15-foot weeds of Lake Le Homme Dieu, Lake Carlos, and Darling Lake. Minnows or plastics are turning pike and bass in 16 to 18 feet on most lakes, while muskie reports have been limited.

Hit Clearwater Lake and Cedar Lake with minnows or crawlers for walleyes in 16 to 22 feet. Crappies, sunfish, bass, and pike are all relating to the 12- to 18-foot weedlines on Sugar Lake, Lake Sylvia, Lake John, Pleasant Lake, Clearwater, and Cedar.

BATTLE LAKE AREA
Troll crankbaits at night in less than 8 feet or drift crawlers and minnows during the day in 22 to 30 feet for walleyes at West Battle Lake and Otter Tail Lake. Sunfish continue to be found in 10 to 15 feet at Stalker Lake, Clitherall Lake, and West Battle, while crappie action has slowed. Northern pike are hitting spoons or sucker minnows on the 15- to 20-foot weedlines of Fiske Lake, Donald Lake, and West Battle, and muskies remain most active on West Battle in 16 to 20 feet.

The main-lake structure on Lake Bemidji is producing walleyes via crankbaits or minnows in 12 to 18 feet. Some muskies continue to be raised with bucktails or topwater baits during low-light periods on Lake Plantagenet and Bemidji in 12 to 16 feet. Crappies and sunfish are being caught in 8 to 14 feet on Turtle River Lake and Moose Lake.

BLACKDUCK AREA
Crankbaits, minnows, and crawlers are producing some walleyes in 12 to 15 feet at Blackduck Lake, Gull Lake, and Island Lake. Bass and northern pike remain active on the weedlines of most lakes, while Gull, Pimushe Lake, North Twin Lake, and Rabideau Lake are safe bets for panfish in 10 to 14 feet. Bear baiting seems to be going well with improved reports since the weather cooled.

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Minnows continue to produce some walleyes 14 to 20 feet on North Long Lake and Whitefish Lake; the bite slowed a bit with the cold front, but was picking up again earlier this week. Look for bass and pike to hit spinnerbaits or minnows on the weedlines of Gull Lake and North Long, while panfish are hitting in 6 to 10 feet on Cullen Lake, Nisswa Lake, and North Long.

CASS LAKE AREA
Walleye action has been strong with leeches during the day in 18 to 20 feet on O’Neil’s Point, Buck’s Bar, and North Cedar Bar on Cass Lake and the north shore of Pike Bay Lake in 16 to 18 feet. During the evening hours troll crankbaits on top of the bars on both lakes for walleyes. Panfish are being caught in the 12- to 20-foot cabbage around Potato Islands on Cass or Lake Andrusia. Muskie action has been best at night on Cass with dark-colored baits on top of the 14- to 18-foot cabbage.

CROSBY AREA
Work the 3- to 6-foot rocks on Clearwater Lake for smallmouth bass or the 14- to 18-foot weeds on Upper Mission Lake for largemouths. The 12- to 15-foot weedlines of Black Bear Lake are holding crappies and the cattail edges on Upper Dean Lake are kicking out pike. On the Mississippi River, sunfish are hitting in 4 to 8 feet, as are walleyes and catfish in 14 to 20 feet.

DETROIT LAKES AREA
Walleyes are hitting minnows or crankbaits in 12 to 16 feet on Big Cormorant Lake, Lake Melissa, Pelican Lake, and Big Detroit Lake. Sunfish and a few crappies are being plucked from the 12- to 14-foot weeds of Floyd Lake, Sour Lake, Severson Lake, and Little Pelican Lake. Big Detroit and Pelican remain the best bets for muskies over 12 to 18 feet of water.

DULUTH AREA
Crankbaits are turning walleyes in 12 to 15 feet on Fish Lake and over 25 feet on Island Lake; look for suspended fish here. Blade baits have produced muskies on the 10-foot structure of Island and the St. Louis River, while bluegills are hitting in 10 feet on Fish. On Lake Superior, lake trout are being caught in 125 to 150 feet and salmon are sitting in the top 40 feet of the water column from the Knife River to Two Harbors. Since it cooled down, activity has been much better at bear baits.

Hit the west side of Basswood Lake in 18 feet or Lake Shagawa in 14 feet with crawlers for walleyes. Downrigging over 70 feet has produced a few lake trout at Burntside Lake and the shallow bays on Birch Lake started giving up crappies.

EMILY AREA
Crappies are hitting tubes and minnows in 10 to 12 feet on Lake Emily and the weedlines on the north end of Roosevelt Lake are producing bass. There’s some evening walleye action with crawlers on Lake Esquagamah in 18 to 20 feet. Look to West Fox Lake with sucker minnows for pike in 12 to 15 feet. Bear baits seem to be getting hit and most hunters report a limited berry crop.

Look for crappies in 6 to 10 feet at Hall Lake, Budd Lake, and Lake Sissiton. Bass fishing remains strong in 3 to 6 feet at George Lake, Sissiton, and Hall. George also is giving up catfish along the shorelines.

GRAND MARAIS AREA
Minnows are producing walleyes at Seagull Lake in 15 to 20 feet, 10 to 14 feet at Cascade Lake, and Lake Saganaga in 20 to 25 feet. Hit Mink Lake with crawlers for splake in 10 to 12 feet or Ram Lake for rainbows in 18 to 20 feet. Smallmouth bass action remains strong along the shorelines of most lakes and a few lake trout are being taken over 30 to 40 feet on Greenwood Lake and Clearwater Lake. Bear hunters are seeing decent activity at their baits, although trail cameras are revealing much of it is at night.

GRAND RAPIDS AREA
You’ll find crappies from 10 to 30 feet and weed-related at lakes Pokegama, Rice, Wabana, Bowstring, Big Splithand, Big Cutfoot Sioux, and Little Cutfoot Sioux. Spinners and crawlers are producing a few walleyes on the Mississippi River, on Pokegama and Wabana in 14 to 20 feet, and in 16 feet at Deer Lake. Work the 10- to 14-foot weedlines of Bass Lake and Grave Lake for bluegills and bear hunters are reporting marginal success at their baits.

HACKENSACK AREA
A tough stretch of wind, rain, and cool weather has limited fishing reports. The best bet will be to go back to those lakes that were producing fish prior to the weather change. Look to Ten Mile Lake or Woman Lake for walleyes in 18 to 25 feet of water; nightcrawlers or minnows would be safe bets. Panfish should still be on the weedlines of Lake Inguadona, Pleasant Lake, or Birch Lake, while the weedlines of most lakes are worth hitting for bass and pike.

Minnows and crawlers are producing walleyes during the day in 20 to 28 feet of water, while the morning hours have been best on the shallower reef edges. Northern pike continue to be caught with crankbaits or minnows on shallow structure, but most of these fish have been on the small side. Look to the reefs for smallmouth bass as well.

Walleye action is slow, but Fish Hook Lake is kicking out pike in 12 to 14 feet and the 10- to 16-foot cabbage on Lake Belle Taine is producing largemouth bass. You’ll find crappies suspended over 30 feet on Big Mantrap Lake or rainbow trout suspended over deep water on Bad Medicine Lake and Long Lake (North).

PERHAM AREA
Minnows or crawlers are producing some walleyes during the day in 16 to 22 feet, as are crankbaits at night in 6 to 10 feet on Big Pine Lake and Little Pine Lake. Look for consistent bass and pike action along the weedlines of most lakes, while panfish can be had in 10 to 12 feet at Rush Lake, Lake Marion, Dead Lake, and Star Lake.

Walleyes are hitting crawlers or crankbaits over 15 feet in the Head of the Lakes area on Lake Pepin. Panfish are being caught in the snags below Goose Lake, the bays are producing pike, and catfish are biting below the dam on the Mississippi River.

ST. CLOUD/EDEN VALLEY AREA
There hasn’t been much to report in this area due to the wind and rain. With some stable weather, it might be worth looking for sunfish in 4 to 10 feet on Cedar Island Lake, Horseshoe Lake, and Long Lake. Start working minnows for walleyes at Lake Koronis in 12 to 25 feet, while lakes such as Grand, Pearl, and Goodner should be safe bets for bass and pike in less than 12 feet.

Crappies continue to be caught on Lake Osakis in 15 to 20 feet and Long Bridge Lake in 6 to 8 feet. Minnows have started producing walleyes on Big Birch Lake in 20 feet or more and on Osakis in 12 to 18 feet.

STAPLES/LITTLE FALLS AREA
The slack-water areas on the Mississippi River are giving up smallmouth bass, pike, and a few walleyes. Hit the weedlines on Fish Trap Lake for crappies and sunfish, while small sunfish continue to hit on the weedlines of most lakes. The Fishermen’s Bridge area on the Gull River is worth noting for panfish.

STARBUCK AREA
Topwater baits are producing smallmouth bass on the shorelines of Lake Minnewaska. You’ll find sunfish and pike in 12 feet on Minnewaska from Lawrence Point to the High School Bar. A few walleyes can be had here after dark on shallow-running crankbaits in 6 to 8 feet.

WINONA AREA
Crawlers continue to produce walleyes on the main channel of the Mississippi River. You’ll find crappies on the snags or secondary channels and sunfish on the wing dams of the river. Trout anglers have offered mixed reports, but most streams remain clear and very fishable.
