Dayton promises Mille Lacs walleye ice fishing

ST. PAUL -- Gov. Mark Dayton says Minnesotans will be able to fish for Mille Lacs Lake walleyes this winter.

The governor Thursday said that he ordered Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Landwehr to establish an ice fishing season, even though the Department of Natural Resources in July canceled walleye fishing on the big lake until Dec. 1.


"I have already told Commissioner Landwehr that I want to be engaged at the end in making that decision," Dayton told reporters after an unrelated event. "It is crucial that there be a season and that it be as generous in terms of limits and opportunities as possible."

The early end to summer fishing has affected businesses around the lake that depend on the activity. However, Dayton said, they rely just as much on ice fishing as they do summer fishing.

"It is crucial that we have a good winter fishing season on Mille Lacs and I will insist that there be one."
