District 2 - Bemidji area Conservation Officer Weekly Report

CO Tom Hutchins (Crookston) reports working ATV complaint areas this week. Time was also spent checking duck hunters and small game hunters. Several prairie chicken hunters were also checked. Violations encountered included transport loaded firearm in a motor vehicle and take non-game migratory bird.

 



CO Tim Gray (Bagley) assisted with training at the academy.  With help of great volunteers and parents, a FAS field day was completed for 30 kids in the area.

CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji) monitored grouse and duck hunting activity in the area. Grouse hunting continues to improve as more and more leaves drop from the trees. Strong south winds have slowed the waterfowl migration and a majority of the birds taken have been local birds. Anglers were checked on area lakes with varying success. A security detail was worked for the annual state auction.


CO Brian Holt (Bemidji) checked waterfowl, grouse and big game hunting during the week. CO Holt received a timber trespass complaint and investigated a TIP complaint. Enforcement activity included hunting license violations.

CO Chris Vinton (Perham) reports checking anglers and duck hunters. Fall walleye fishing is getting better. CO Vinton patrolled area WMAs for stands and dumping of trash.

CO Al Peterson (Osage) continued with waterfowl and bear enforcement, several grouse hunters, ATV riders and anglers/boaters were also checked. Two possible deer hunting violations were reported and follow-up continues.


CO Gary Forsberg (Pelican Rapids) reports a slower second weekend to duck hunting. Some hunters did well on ringbills with most reporting a slow weekend. Time was also spent checking fishermen, trespass issues, tree stands left on WMA and issues with hunters in a state park.

CO Angie Warren (Detroit Lakes) worked small game and migratory waterfowl hunting activity. Many hunters contacted commented on not seeing many grouse but water fowlers were still finding a few birds. CO Warren followed up on open cases and met with Mahnomen Co. Attorney. Complaints of abandoned property on a WMA, possible illegal waterfowl hunting activity, and wetland conservation act violations were received and investigated. CO Warren worked a security detail at a state surplus auction. Trails were worked and contacts made with ATV riders.

CO Bill Landmark (Moorhead) spent the week checking deer hunters, waterfowl hunters, ATV activity, and AIS activity in the Moorhead area. The officer also attended training in Nisswa. An injured northern harrier was collected from a concerned citizen. A wetland investigation was also conducted. Calls from the public included questions regarding disabled motor vehicle permits for deer hunting, trespassing complaints, shooting ducks near a residence, shooting clay targets in a residential area, questions about upcoming snowmobile safety classes, and a report of a deer with an arrow through its jaw. Several calls of stolen trail cameras were also received.
