ST. PAUL -- With conditions ripe for wildfires across much of Minnesota, the state Department of Natural Resources urged caution when burning vegetation this fall.

The DNR rates the fire danger across southern and central Minnesota as high or very high, and burning permits are required statewide as of Thursday.

Burning permits are required when less than 3 inches of snow is on the ground, according to a DNR release. Linda Gormanson, DNR wildfire prevention supervisor, recommends finding alternatives to burning vegetation, like mulching or composting.

“In Minnesota, 98 percent of all wildfires are caused by people, and the largest contributor is burning debris like leaves, grass and brush,” she said.


If you must burn, the DNR suggests drowning the fire with water, stirring and repeating until the burn site is cold.
