Lake Superior rainbow trout limit includes any in your possession

Q: The regulation book says that the possession limit for rainbow trout from Lake Superior is three. Does that include fish that have been smoked or canned?
 

 





A: Yes. Unclipped rainbow trout (steelhead) may not be possessed at any time and are catch-and-release only. Clipped rainbows (Kamloops or ’loopers) have a possession limit of three with a minimum size of 16 inches.

Possession limits for fish are the same as daily limits unless otherwise noted in the Fishing Regulations book. Possession limits include all fish in your livewell or on your stringer as well as fish in your freezer and all fish that you have canned, smoked or have stored at another location.

If you are already in possession of a limit of fish (for instance, three Kamloops rainbows) it is unlawful to target, fish for, keep or possess any further fish of that species until you dispose of those in your possession. If you are worried that you may be getting close to a possession limit and wish to continue to fish, consider catch-and-release until you have a chance to eat some of your catch.
