Mornin'! Got a little colder here than expected. Was 12 at choretime. Another ewe lambed overnite so we've had 6 ewes come in so far. May be a couple more close so hopefully they can hang on until after shearing tomorrow. The buck lamb born last night was black or natural colored. We've had black ones before but this was interesting because we are using two total outcross rams and this is their 1st year. In order to produce a black lamb, at minimum both parents must carry the allele for black wool. Since the trait is recessive, white wool is dominant. We now know that the ram that was in our home pasture is Ww and that the ewe is as well. We know that a few years ago we used a ram that also carried the black allele as we started getting some black lambs at that point. We suspect some of our ewe base also carries the trait but we're not sure just which ones w/o genetic testing. The birth of a natural colored lamb confirms that she carries the black trait. A link to a simple explanation of what I'm trying to explain:

So Dotch is black wool worth more money since it seems to be more uncommon?  I would think some real cool things could be made out of it after just having it tanned.

Depends. If you're a handspinner, then it can be. We have some beautiful scarves, hats, etc. that others have made from our natural colored wool. The major wool buyers who in turn sell to the mills discount it as they prefer the white wool. One reason for this : It takes dyes better

Morning all.  Having my cheerios and coffee and then off to work.  Wish I could stay home.  I just bought a 94 Dodge short box with a snow plow on it.  Needs a battery and some TLC.  Sure wish I could go try to get it started and get it home today...   Oh well something for tomorrow.  Just got it to clean up around my place not going to go out for hire.  Getting tired of the 4 wheeler thing on cold days or nights.  So I guess we probably won't get any snow up here now that I am getting a plow.     See ya all later.

Down to 7 here.  Coffee tastes better on a day off.  Gray here too.  Had a good day yesterday.  I had an oil leak occur on the 94 Ford.  Very healthy leak.  I was worried about it being a head gasket.  As I looked around on the motor I see this inspection cover on the drivers side with 6 bolts securing it.  Towards the front is where it looked like the oil was oozing right out of it.  I checked that bolt and it was so loose I could turn it with my fingers.  I gave it a turn and a half and the next one which was hard to get at 3/4 turn.  I then moved the truck to a clean spot and it hardly leaked any more drops on the floor.  I suppose I will have to change that gasket in time but am I happy that is where the leak is from.  AND the 94 Dodge with a snoplow I am buying from my neighbor that has sat for at least 2 years started right up yesterday.  I will put a new battery in it today and hopefully bring it home.  I will post pics of it later when and if I get it here.  Hope it is not frozen down.  It sits in a pool of ice......  Gonna be a great day!!!!

breakfast was interesting, simple fried egg sandwich.  the first egg only about 1/3 of the egg made it into the pan.  oh well ate that and tried it again. all good!!  but then it's clean up time, oh yea!!  well got that done and by golly I got it cleaned up pretty good.  I was just impressed by how far raw egg can spread!!  I just have to remember not to try crack them to hard!!!  another lesson learned!! ;D

Might try and hit the lake for more of those 11 inch perch with the boy.  We have to be back early as he has basketball and cub scouts tonight.  I also started searching for a new truck.  Started looking at 3/4 tons and wow they sure know what they want for one of those.
