Hopefully she doesn't go through dudes as fast as rides... Aftermorning gents, this warm weather is welcome fore sure dotch, definitely making chores and everyday life easier.  Sorry to hear about the mil Mike.
I have a huge maple trunk (about 7 feet tall and and super fat) leftover from taking the tree down a year and a half ago that I'm thinking on tapping.  Last spring the sucker was solid juice coming out the top, any pointers on when and how to fill up some buckets.  Might be kinda early but I wanna give it a shot.

I used to do that as soon as the sap starts running......takes a lot to make a jar of maple surple! I believe it cooks down at 10:1.  MIddle of March to middle of April is sap time. Days need to be in 40's, nights below freezing. the freeze/thaw cycle gets the sao a movin'. Any bucket or pail works, boob. I like white plastic painter buckets.  You can use a piece of copper tubing, angle cut, if you don't want to buy  taps. get pan of it boiling on grill or wood stove, it'll go ll day before it cooks down all the way. Expect a nice jar of thicker than water, clearish sweet surple.

Morning all, 38 here and the ice sheet in the back yard is taking a hit, took the pooch around the block yesterday and can't believe all the pigs out there, beer bottles and cans and all kinds of junk exposed after some of the snow disappeared.    I need some coffee...Later!!

I have done the maple syrup thing a few times Bobber.  Sort of fun but you have to stay with it once you start.  I did 1/2" copper pieces about 6" long.  I cut a 45 at the end I drove into the hole I drilled in the tree.  Make it just a little snug fit.  Only drive it in till the 45 is in the tree an inch or so.  When you are done just drive a piece of wooden dowel in the hole you drilled.  Works great so the tree can heal.  .  Well then I put a 3' piece of that real clear plastic tubing that fits snug on the copper piece and run that to a 5 gallon pail.  Cut a piece of plywood that covers the pail.  Drill a hole for the tubing.  This keeps all of the dirt and stuff out of the sap.  I put two taps in each tree and each had a seperate bucket.  When it was flowing I had both buckets overflowing each night when I got home from work.  I used my turkey cooker burner and got one of those blue speckled kettles.  Get a big one.  Cook it slowly and keep adding sap as you go.  Finally finish it off in the house till the temp rises using a candy thermometer.  It goes fast once it starts so keep an eye on it.  I did it with silver maples.  I had so much sap I had buckets waiting to be cooked.  I kept it in the cool garage but after a couple of days it got cloudy so I threw it.  Was only able to keep up with one big tree...    I read it is on average 40-1.

Well we had 4 basketball games today between the 2 kids in 2 different towns and then momma went on a girls weekend thingy.  The kids have now talked me into going to a movie......they know I can't turn down the popcorn.  Then when the popcorn wears off I realize I'm at some cartoon.

Made it back and didn't have to see a cartoon.  They picked a Dogs Purpose.  Pretty good show.  Kids came right home and wanted to get the dogs out to play.  Didn't cry at the movie but that brought a tear to my eye.  I swear my old dog can read my mind.......well except those few times he pointed a skunk.   ;)

That sounds fun G, a busy day of running then wind down with a show. Morning fellas not much on the agenda today, went and spent time with a buddy yesterday that had surgery and will a few months of work. Filled up his freezer with homemade brats, bacon and pulled pork from the shoulder I did and a couple of roosters.  Think I'll head over to holidays wash Bay soon and beat the crowds.  Why is it every time I'm up early the paper lady doesn't show til 8, by then I've caught all the news on tv...Thanks for the info LPS, I'm a rookie at tapping but I'll give er a try...Later boys!!

I was thinking Bobber.  I think I used 3/4" copper for the taps.  Worked great.  Sat in the fish house yesterday till sundown.  Got 1 14" walleye right away, thought man this is going to be great..  Only had two more bites.  Sure felt good to be in the fish house though.  I may go out here in about 1/2 hour and sit for awhile.  Then doing spare ribs so may not get out later on.
