I'm with Glenn on the carry thing.  I understand some need it and even my gal has one for a situation we'd all agree its needed for BUT practically speaking it seems like a daunting task to have the gun with you at all times to protect yourself.  A fella like Reb I'd have total faith in but for many John Q or Mary Q Publics I think it provides a nice sense of false security.  Anyway....

It was national puppy day yesterday.  My dogs didn't seem to care much as they layed on beds and took my spot when I got up to go pee at 2am like always.  50 pound black lab lays next to me all night...every night.  I get up to go pee and she moves onto my spot.  It actually works out cause she keeps the spot warm in my absence but last night she wouldn't move.  I fricking layed on her and she slid a bit but for God's sake dog move over a bit. She is a girl and I do have that allure so it makes sense. sleazy-422.gif

RH and Jerkbait...Been waiting on my permit to carry renewal for 3 weeks now...what do you guys pay? $75 just to renew in stoopid CAWchester; $100 for first issuance. I've been carrying since the 80's. Think I'd get a price break or something after all these renewals. They're gettin' rich off of me.

Reb I paid $75 for the permit.  Don't know what the renewal would be.  Minnesota is a carry state and not a carry and conceal state.  I think most conceal anyway which is the smart thing to do.  To those who think a carry permit is only for certain people, you should get informed on what's happening in just daily crime reports.  Nobody knows or can see what I carry.  Most likely will never use it.  Only in extreem situations when your life is threatend.  It happens every day to many people, I'm not going to be one of them.  My brother has been bugging me for years to get one.  So I got one.  There are plenty of places that do not allow weapons in their buildings.  Most do.  I'm for protecting myself and my family at home and when I travel.  good luck.

Also, too many take the "quickie class", just to get the permit, then never shoot.  I'm REALLY against that. They don't understand the legal consequences at all. Take a good class that has at least 4 hours of legal. Even if you do have to shoot to save a life, they don't realize that at that point, your life changes forever. The cops will take the weapon, you will be subjected to lengthy interrogation, will need a lawyer, etc. Even if you're all cleared after that lengthy process, then there's the civil suit that may be brought against you. I practice with and at least handle and use my guns DAILY...and in the dark, in various areas, with different types of clothes, shoot regularly, etc. If you can't or aren't willing to do at least some of that, you probably shouldn't be carrying.

Reb, that was a good post.  I have been shooting all my life including handguns.  At a range.  I go twice a week to a indoor range.  Wish I lived up north so those $20 bucks per range time would not be needed, but it's worth it.  I take my wife with me.  Fortunatly  I have learned from the class I took, but mostly with shooting with my brother and his knowledge of the laws.

Glen,  I hear you when you talk about the times in the woods when you think you need a weapon.  I spent years in the Arrowhead deep in the forests and fished many streams near their sources.  I've had a few run in's with bears.  They were scared of me it seems just  as much I was scared of them.  Once in awhile they would stand up and i would think this is the moment but they would turn around go scamper off.  Now back then I carried my 357 mag. in my younger years not even thinking you had to have a permit.  Even back then over the years I did not decide to shoot because over the years I have gotten to learn about the bears a bit and their reaction to humans.  But you never know, all it takes is that one time.  Personally I like to have that edge just in case.  But with humans you never know, but you have to know yourself.

Someone can be 50 feet from you and it only takes seconds for that person to run and get to you.  Those seconds you have to make a call.  I really got it for travel more than anything.  I didn't get it to use it, I got it for if I need it.  I read my local sheriffs report all the time.  Stuff that is not in the news.  I hear from my nephew on daily patrols.  All of this is enough for me to carry.  good luck.

it really is a tough call for me to decideif I want a CCP. I see like glenn. I'm in an area where if I wanna carry in the woods, I will.  public? not sure why. I'm in a very low key area, where if I wanna carry in public I will but what for. enter my house to do harm, your dead or should have been. If I lived in a are with more potential for issues. maybe thatd be different. my daughter on the other hand, I'm gonna have her take it, and have take continuous training like reb talks about. I think its a good thing. but agree with one becoming so efficient with gun that its apart of them.

AHA! Not CCP, Mr. Boar....just "Carry Permit". Minnysoda is an open carry state.  ;)

So let me get this straight. In minnesota you don't need a permit to have a pistol to bring in the woods but if you want to carry it out and about you need the conceal permit??

I think you need a permit to carry a pistol/handgun anyplace you go.  But years ago I carried a handgun anyway like I said before when fishing up north deep in the woods.  Never thought about a carry permit or knew even I needed one.  good luck.

Glenn, you don't need a permit to hunt with a pistol.

(depending on the game and caliber, I should add)

BUT....be aware of THESE laws:

See the MN Hunting & Trapping Regulations:

Handguns:
"Persons age 18 or older may carry a handgun in the woods and
fields or upon waters to hunt or target shoot. Persons under age 18
may carry handguns for hunting if in the actual presence or under the
direct supervision of the person’s parent or guardian, and if they meet
firearms safety requirements (see page 20). A person may not
possess a firearm while bowhunting for deer. A person may take bear,
elk and moose by archery while in possession of a firearm."

The “Concealed carry or permit to carry” provisions apply to certain
hunting activities. Persons with a permit under this law generally
may carry their handguns uncased and loaded while hunting, and
while traveling to or from hunting locations by motor vehicle under
the hunting firearms transportation laws. However, possession of the
handgun while 'shining' or while hunting deer by archery would still
subject the possessor to the provisions of these laws.

Also, I think if you carry a handgun on ANY motor vehicle, (ATV) without a permit,  it MUST be cased and unloaded.......

Note the boo-boo of "Concealed carry" ...Minnysoda doesn't even know their own law word usage!!

More clarification, right outta my book:

Carrying

"A person, other than a peace officer, as defined in section 626.84, subdivision 1, who carries, holds, or possesses a pistol in a motor vehicle, snowmobile, or boat, or on or about the person's clothes or the person, or otherwise in possession or control in a public place without first having obtained a permit to carry the pistol is guilty of a gross misdemeanor." M.S.A. § 624.714

Also...reciprocity...

Minnesota only honors Idaho and South Dakota Enhanced Carry Permits.

OK, everyone got all that straight?  :rotflmao: You should haveta take the State Boards to get your Minnysoda Peace Officer License!!! Hoo boy!! That was fun! No multiple choice on THAT!!  :doah:  :censored:

Morning guys, we've got 36 now. So much water on the bay that we had a couple snow geese sittin out in the middle of 1 of the big puddles all day yday. The septic installer rolled down the drive about 9 & found a frozen pipe about 10' from the lift station. He had to go back to his shop to get their pressure washer but when they got back it didn't take them very long to thaw it out. :happy1: A couple small projects done outdoors yday & probably some more of that today as it's going to be another nice 1. Hope you enjoy your day

Morning all.  Ok Rebs.  So if I have my handgun unloaded and in a case can I have it on the seat of my car, truck, boat, atv, etc?  Or in a tote on said vehicle??    I always thought that was ok to do so.  I do not have a CC yet.  Not sure if I want one or not.  I don't want to be tempted to put myself in a bad situation because of it.  Man we are getting right to it this morning I see.  Good info to talk about.  Well I am getting ready to go to work.  Darn.  Oh well I will save this time to take off when the weather is nicer.  I should have taken a picture of these idiots yesterday.  The river is really flowing now and 2 full sized trucks were on Baudette Bay appx. 100-150' from the open water yesterday afternoon.  It was about 5 oclock so the ice had all day to deteriorate under them.  It was windy too.  Further eroding the ice under them.  Oh well.  Must be their parents fault they are so slow.  lol  Looks to be a great day, 26 here now.  It is nice that we have these below freezing nights so things aren't so muddy in the mornings.

Ya know barry. I decided based on this last night. I'm gona take the class when I have time,  why, cause they will go ove every question you have, they will put in your mind whether this is right for you or not. us discussing is really good. but I think youll get more outa the class itself. Much appreciate what reb and other are putting forth. but I feel I cant rely make a decision until ive done the class and then I can decide to keep up the lisence or not.
