With all the talk about the first time ever black head coach's going to the Super Bowl this year, two very important milestones have been overlooked.

This will also be the FIRST TIME EVER that:

1. A black head coach (Lovie Smith)  has ever won a Super Bowl ;D

2. A black head coach (Tony Dungy) has ever lost a Super Bowl :'(

The first person in history to have won a super bowl both as a coach and a player. (Tony Dungee)

Also the first time an opening kickoff has been returned for a TD.

Only if he gets to bring his head coach with him  8)

Of course, I'd like to see him make a step UP (up to 5280 feet, that is) !!

They said it was the first time. So who are the other 2?

Mike Ditka won the 1971 Superbowl as a Tight End with the Dallas Cowboys.
He also won it as the Head Coach of the Chicago Bears in 1985.

Tom Flores won the 1969 Superbowl as Backup to QB Len Dawsons  against our favorite underacheiving Football Club (Vikings).
He also won as the Head Coach of the Oakland Raiders in 1980 and 1983.

Tony Dungy Is the third Person to accomplish this.

hope that clears it up!

And one more side note, Dungy is the Second Minority to accomplish this as Tom Flores is Hispanic.

good point...  i wonder if there was as much hype raised about it back then as there was with this superbowl, being the first black head coach as apposed to being the first hispanic head coach...

i am guessing no.

don't get me wrong, i am truely happy for the guy, but am i the only one who kind of got turned off on all the "first black head coach to the superbowl" hype?  does it really matter?  we preach equality and all that, then go and make a big deal out of this...
am I wrong?

sorry about maybe taking this thread in the wrong direction.  admin, slap my hand if I do bad thing.  ;)

"Being Problematic is being problematic, yet not being problematic is being problematic." Opening up dialague is a good thing. There are so many times that we find our selves stepping on toes or side-stepping topics, but the only way we can figure out how the hell to deal with these topics is to talk about it. Is it a good thing that there is so much hype? Maybe! That is the only correct answer. It is all about perspective. The only way we will ever reach a true state of equality is to talk about what that means. Communication is the simple part... being open to it is what we struggle with. Do your absolute best to be open to it and roll with it. If you ask a question to clarify and you are confronted by someone that is upset because you asked the question, that is not your fault for them getting upset (as long as you were attempting to be truly respectfull). Do your best to do your best... communicate! And we will be just fine.
