It was a windy one this past weekend. The winds topped over 35 mph on Friday night into Saturday morning. The little dusting of snow on Saturday morning was just enough to give us white out conditions all day long. The fishing on Friday was slow, but Saturday was much better toward the evening. There were a total of 26 walleyes caught out of the rentals this weekend. The privet houses did well also on Saturday night into Sunday morning. The best bite was in, either very shallow water 7 ft or less, or very deep water 27 ft or greater. Not much of a bite in the 20 to 24 ft range. The big walleyes are still biting off of the Second Reef; they are in the 27 to 29 inch range.

There were 4 of them over 28 inches this weekend. The 2 humps out in front are still putting out fish, more so towards the evening and into the late night. There were 5 northern caught this weekend also off of the Second Reef and 2 off of the humps. They measured, from 36 inches to 39 inches and 1 over 40 inches. That is a huge pike man. They were very fat and sassy too! There were a few people, that were hooked up with one for a few minutes but it was not to long and they broke off after they had already seen them once or twice under the ice.

The perch bite is still slow as of Sunday. I am still predicting a great perch bite, as we start the hunt after the season ends. The best bait this weekend was, fatheads under a bobber with a pink or glow gamy hook, in a size 6. As always, some did better than others this weekend. I was just happy to not have any of my houses freeze up the regulators over night, or have any of them run out of fuel. Sometimes that does happen, but not very often. You have to stay on top of them. There is nothing worse that having a client call you up at 3:30 in the morning and say: hey man we are out of fuel, especially when it is as cold as it was on Saturday with the wind howling out of the N.W. at 35 to 40 mph. Not today man!

I have 4 and 6 hole houses available for this weekend. I have moved 6 of the 4 holer’s out to deeper water for this weekend. That was the best bite for this weekends cold front, I thought I would try it for next weekend’s weather. The weather this coming weekend is suppose to be very cold, but the front is suppose to come in on Wednesday, 2 days should be enough time to level out the barometer for this weekends bite.

I will be plowing off houses and road’s most of the week, after this weekends winds. The drifts are over 3 and 4 feet deep around them, and the drifts on the roads in spots are even worse. This fine sugar snow sets up like concrete in this cold weather and you can’t plow it with a straight blade. You have to brake out the big guns for that. The infamous V plow is the only way to get it done. I keep the houses plowed off, so that they don’t get to much weight on them and start flooding.

The ice looks great, and we now have 20 to 21 inches of ice. We should put on another 2 to 3 inches this week.

Be safe out there in the big bad cement jungle, which unfortunately most of you have to navigate through all week. Driving in the city is to say the least, frustrating.

Have a great week

We will see ya

When we see ya
