Where do you pot a post like this huh? In ice fishing? maybe... but old school ice shanty stoves were often home made, which is kind of a garage/tinkering topic.

Well, I made one for my son't spear house a while back. I used a 30 lb lp tank (it had a pin hole leak, retired from lp duty)

It went a little like so.

First I completely burned off all the pressure the tank had in it, hooked it up to a heater and run it empty. Then I spun the valve out of the threads, filled the tank with water and cut the top off the tank with a grinder and a cutting wheel (tank was filled with water to displace any combustible danger)

then I cut a round plate to cap the top, this will make for a nice cooking surface.

Here the side has been cut open for the door, chimney pipe hole in the back towards the top.

Inside the door has been framed with flat bar for the door cut out to close against.

now we are getting somewhere...

I put a backbone plate on the inside of the door to help it hold it's shape.

I kicked the chimney out the back to keep the top clear for cooking.

adjustable draft valve

WTF? it's starting to look like R2D2, lol.

Handle on the door latch is a valve spring from an engine. (insert tim tool man taylor grunting noises here)

Stove pipe dampener is another round cut out from steel plate, another engine valve spring for a handle here.

test burn outside, also helped burn off the old tank paint.

There it is.

Still in use to this day. It's kind of fun having a little wood stove in the spear house!!

Good grief Dave! You're like MacGyver on steroids! That would be kinda cool to have a wood burner in yer ice fishing/spearing shack. Was a guy who fished on St. Olaf here many moons ago that burned wood. Long since gone now but sure loved the smell of it when I was out there.  :happy1:

It's a hoot being the only one out there with smoke coming out of a chimeny. lol

Sometimes people will walk over just to have a look.

No insulation required in that spear house! She gets warm.

I was also informed that a spear is sort of a key component to successful spearing....

So, made one of those too.

I'm a total rookie myself. I've only been with my boys in this little shack.

But, the kid expressed interest some years back and I wanted to help set him up for something I never had time for or experienced myself in my youth.

It's working out nice for the whole family. :)

Great picture story.  You are one heck of a craftsman Dave.  I would like to see some pics of your shop.  I have never really speared but it looks like a blast.  Sort of hunting and fishing at the same time.

I think they have a pretty good show in GR around the 1st of Dec too. Some those decoys are works of art.
