                           :reporter; DNR announces sign-up for:

2017 frog and toad calling survey

 :coffee: ....
Volunteers are needed to help the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources track population changes in the states 14 frog and toad species as part of an annual survey.

The frog and toad survey would not be possible without the dedication of generous volunteers, said Janine Kohn, project coordinator. Frogs and toads are indicators of habitat quality and provide valuable information on the condition of Minnesotas wetlands. Through this 21-year citizen science program, volunteers gather important data which helps us track the health of the states frog and toad populations and, therefore, wetlands and water quality.

This year, some survey participants will pilot a new mobile app to send their field observations to the DNR. This is an addition to last years new sign-up map. Volunteers drive to 10 designated stops on a route and conduct nighttime listening surveys on three evenings between March and July to capture seasonal variations in frog and toad species.

People should sign up now, to connect with nature while participating in this exciting citizen science adventure, Kohn said.

The continued help of Minnesotans who volunteer their time and donate to the Nongame Wildlife Checkoff on their state income tax returns helps the DNR Nongame Wildlife Program perform important surveys and research studies like the annual frog and toad calling survey.

I knew it ...I knew it.  :banghead:  Here I post a topic of major interest to everyone on a day when things seem to be slow in da news. What happens next: Glenn comes in and diverts the story into an opportunity to pick on 2 defenseless individuals that always try to stay out of trouble.  tut_tut-3315.gif

Still waiting to hear our first western chorus frogs of the season. Usually on a warm still spring night when the ice is off the wildlife pond they start in. If it stays warm, within a few nights they get loud. When we first restored the wetland, one night the wife had been outside for lamb check and she came back in and frantically woke me up. While I'm used to this, I was surprised when she asked me to go outside and listen to the loud noise coming from the pond. She was convinced it was a gas leak as there's a gas pipeline that goes through that area. When I got outside I knew exactly what it was: thousands of horny tiny western chorus frogs! It's become tradition to listen for them. Eventually their song is replaced by the large American toad population we have.

Had a lot of the calling around here last year. After lots of hunting around, trying to match the calls, and listening to online recordings, and finally seeing some in my mulch chips, realized it was toads that were singing...I never knew they did that.

Can we collect all the Frogs for bait, right after we mark them down as seen-heard on the app?

I see Borgy's info says he's a proud member of the "CWCS". Is that Croakers With Colored Spots? OR, would it also be known as a "Spotted Meandering Union Retarded Frog... or "SMURF"?   :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
