Potential Illinois state record crappie pulled from Kinkaid Lake

A state record that has held for more than 40 years may have been broken Tuesday, according to DNR Fisheries Chief Dan Stephenson.

Stephenson said southern Illinois fisheries biologist Shawn Hirst called him to report a black crappie weighing 4 pounds, 8.8 ounces has been verified. The fish was caught out of Kinkaid Lake by Ryan Povolish.

The Illinois record black crappie weighed 4 pounds, 8 ounces and was caught by John Hampton in Rend Lake on May 15, 1976.

The Illinois record white crappie weighed 4 pounds, 7 ounces and was caught by Kevin Dennis in a private pond in Morgan County on April 8, 1973.

Kinkaid Lake is known for producing large crappie. Crappie over 2 pounds are caught each year and at least two 4-pound crappie have been caught there in the last four years.

Stephenson said paperwork would have to be completed before the crappie could be declared a state record fish.
