There are a number of lakes in MN where the harvest us close to, or over, the sustainable level.  One line IA just another way to reduce harvest.   Banning Spears would be another.
There isn't enough spearing pressure anyplace to even come close to making a difference in population levels. If I didn't know better Del I would think you worked for the DNR with all your common sense :bonk:

Spearing is one of the oldest methods of harvest there is and is here to stay.
Up until the price was lowered a few years ago, and we started making the old guys buy a license for it, and allowed non residents, we sold under 18,000 per yer. We now sell around 26,000  per year.  Hardly a number that is significant , especially when many of these are to guys taking a few day trip once a year to try and spear some big pike.
The only reason the DNR has had closure to spearing in lakes is because they have musky in them as well.
Spearing is and always has been a social issue rather than a biological one. And that my friend is why we can't currently spear walleye.

Allowing spearing of northern just shows the low opinion of them that continues in the state of Minnesota.  Whack em and stack em.

Let Indians apply the same argument and standard to walleye, and folks have a melt down.

sorry you think this way, there COULD be people like that, but the people I know only take a meal.. so what the heck id is wrong with that???   yes there are jack as's out there.  we are not the netting  the fish and that is where more of the problem lays.. you drive around Mil Lac's in the spring, on the shore area or off the roads where the nords are dumped uncleaned, and then you will see!  I think you chase muskies and if you do that tells me a ton.

and again yes there are people that do what you say, the poachers I think they are called.

Like I said a social issue.......and Mn doesn't allow the take of any game fish with hook or line during the spawn.....when the majority of the native kill happens with walleye or any other fish they spear.
So how does spearing pike in winter, show any more lack of opinion of the fish than the droves of hook and line guys practicing catch and release, ripping out thier guts in the spring when they run into their spawning areas?

Using PETA arguments to defend spearing seems like a stretch.    And theoretically even C&R angling for species in closed season is unlawful

One of the few times you are correct Del. Theoretically it is unlawful. But so is the whack and stack mentality of what you claim the guys spearing are doing. Since we are speaking theoretical here how many hook and line guys buy a license every year??? How many spear? Theoretically, the statistical probability of hook and line causing damage to the fishery is far greater than the guy throwing a spear.
PETA arguments? Don't know where that came from. I gave ya FACT Based numbers previously. Something you never seem to be able to provide on any subject Del. You have some real fact based numbers to defend your hate of the spear chuckers????

I don't spear at all.  However I know folks that do.  The one's I know let the big girls swim on.  They want the 4 to 5 pounders for the table.  I like that size myself for the table, but I'll keep the smaller one's also for pickled pike which I make all year long.  Why keep a large pike or any large fish anyway these day's?  No reason for it unless you want a wall mount.  Even then you have the ability to get a replica made.  I remember when I was on a other site and spearing was talked about.  Man things got nasty as they always did on that site.  Spearing is legal and regulated just like using a line and hook.  I think most guy's that spear are sportsman and follow the laws.  They have bad apples just like the hook and liners.  We probably have more because there are a lot more of us.  One thing to remember as I do this on open water or hard water.  Take a plastic bag with you and pick up some trash when you see it.  That bothers me more than any other issue while fishing.  good luck.

Couldn't agree with ya more Reinhard. I my self have not speared in over 20 years. Not because I didn't agree with it, more of a time thing. I will again at some point. To be honest I rarely fish soft water either. When I do go it is mainly hard water and that is even getting hard to find the time anymore with kids in sports. We tend to spend more time in the woods....so I make up for that working longer hours in the seasons when I can't be chasing some sort of game in the woods. I honestly have no more love or hate for anybody that chases fish by any method. As long as they are not being game hogs and wasteful.

The only reason I jumped into this conversation in the first place was to call a spade a spade. It pisses me off when certain guys start running their mouths and others down for something they love to do that is completely legal. Especially when they have nothing other than hearsay or bar room biology to back there argument up......love it or hate it, I don't much care. But I call it like I see it.
It's been a long day boys, I intend to wind down with couple :toast:

Ya me too.  The tribes have to get with 2017 for a change.  Netting walleyes during the spawn is never ok.  They do not need the fish to survive no longer.  They already have liberal fishing that we do not.  This netting aspect of the treaty is outdated but still in effect.  However they should get with the DNR regulations like everyone else does.  We all want to promote future fishing for our kids.  I would think the tribes would want the same thing.  good luck.

They don't have to. Until we quit paying for the stocking of the lakes and they kick in a fair share, it will never happen. Kinda like paying for all the welfare projects. Until society brains up and quits the handouts without any stipulations it won't stop
