LPS,
Just to clarify, I may have misread your post. I was thinking normal medical coverage until you reach 65 at which time you would be on Medicare.  There are numerous options once you are 65.  Most people opt for what is now called "Medicare part C".  As you may know part "A" is for hospitalization and is provided at no cost.  Part "B" is for normal doctor stuff and you cost may vary but usually falls in the $125-$130 range.  Part "D" is for drugs and I'm not sure but costs are general low.  Several companies now offer part "C" (formally known as "Medicare Advantage" plan.  Medica, BlueCross and Ucare are three of these companies.  Part "C" basically replaces part A,B and D with one plan.  These plans operated just like an HMO and all you medical stuff is handled by them.  Medicare is basically out of the picture. (except you still pay the part "B" premium out of your SS check.  The costs can vary depending on the copays and deductibles you select but generally run between $50-$150 per month. How can they provide this coverage at that low cost you ask?  Well, Medicare gives them your premium plus what is considered their average cost per person on Medicare (because they would pay this anyway).  The companies offering part "C" have to follow all the Medicare rules regarding coverage including max out of pocket etc.  Note: this is NOT a Medicare "Supplement" or "Cost" Plan.  You can switch to one of these plans when you A. retire, B. turn 65, C. During open enrollment periods (November-December).  Each persons situation may be different and you will have to work out what is best for you but if you look into it, you will generally see that part "C" is the way to go.  You have three months on either side of turning 65 to sign up for Medicare without incurring a penalty.  I you do not sign up and start paying for B and D (C can include both of these) you will be penalized with higher premiums the rest of you life. So, don't mess around here.

Thanks DE.  Great info.  I will retire in August and I will stay on my wifes insurance for this year and next year when I turn 65 will get on the Medicare thing so wanted this info so I am ready when the time comes.  I thought $518 for a supplement sounded like a large chunk of money so it is great to hear that I may be able to get good coverage for half that amount.  That will leave more money in my pocket which is a big thing.   :happy1: :happy1:

Till I read Deadeye's post I was wondering about the pricing also. Find an agent you trust and sit down, most of the supplement plans are pretty similar, just small differences its hard for a regular person to sort out. Wife and I lose her group insurance September 1st so I have to do something soon also. We're both 65 so medicare kicks in. Just like you this weather is just plain depressing, can't do summer stuff and winter stuff is pretty much over. I was hoping to be drifting around in your river but even that's a messed up thing this year. Since Clemenston (sp?) closed it's hard to get good ice reports anymore. Is open to land a boat at Frontier yet or further?  Retirement is great but not used to the money thing yet.

Good to hear from you Hawg.  Royal Dutchman Resort usually has some good ice reports on the river but this year I think many have lost interest.  Was 0 here this morning.  Still making ice.

I went to see my doctor for a physical last week, who is also a good friend.  He asked me overall how do you feel. I told him, well doc, every day I get up my back hurts worse, and most days I have no idea what day it is, and my pecker don’t work anymore. But on a good note, my tolerance for alcohol is getting better every day.

My wife and I are looking at land north of Hinckley for a deer camp/summer retreat/eventual retirement home.  We were up last weekend-saw a LOT of deer.  Turkeys too.  We found a nice parcel we like, but I'll be  damned if I was going to go tromping around in all that snow.  We'll wait a couple weeks and go back up again when we can walk it.  I'm guessing the hunting will be good-there were three deer standing in the trail leading into the property when we rolled up on it.

Yes Beeker I hope all stays well.  That's why I decided to go at 64.  I could work longer but want to go when I feel good and we will be ok financially so why not.  The aches and pains of normal life are creeping up so will keep cutting firewood to keep in shape.  lol

Here is a big question.  What do you guys do for your Medicare supplement?  Through my Union I can get the Blue Cross supplement for about $450 a month.  I was hoping it would be half that much.  I appreciate any info you all have on that.

Shop around.  I have a medicare advantage plan, including part D drugs, from ucare that is just over 200, and it is that high because of dear Mayo.   (They are good, but expensive)

The medicare site has a tool for comparing all the options for you in choosing either a supplement or an advantage plan.
