Study to investigate mortality of Mille Lacs walleyes

July  2018

  :coffee: .....
MINNEAPOLIS — A new study is using underwater listening devices to find out why more young walleye in a Minnesota lake aren’t making it to adulthood.
Acoustic telemetry will be used to track the movements of the juvenile fish in Lake Mille Lacs, Minnesota Public Radio News reported. The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe hopes to test a hypothesis that warming lake temperatures are contributing to the recent walleye population decline.

The band has partnered with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Fond du Lac Band of Ojibwe for the study. The tribe received a grant of nearly $200,000  :doah: from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the study, which will run through the spring of 2019.

Scientists have placed 61 acoustic receivers in the lake in a grid pattern more than 9,800 feet apart. They aim to implant transmitters in about 70 adult walleye this month. Researchers will also tag 35 juvenile fish in the fall and another 35 this spring, said biologist Carl Klimah.

“We’ll know roughly where that fish is, we’ll know what depth it’s at, we’ll know what temperature it’s occupying,” Klimah said. “So there’s a lot of information that comes with it.”

Researchers hope to see if walleye are moving into smaller areas of the lake as they seek the optimal water temperature of around 68 degrees. That movement could bring juvenile and adult walleye closer together and could increase the chances of the adult fish eating the younger fish, Klimah said.

Walleye fishing in Mille Lacs Lake has been limited to catch-and-release this summer. Minnesota DNR officials have said the walleye population shows signs of improving health, but angling restrictions are still needed to help its recovery.

Another waste of tax payer money  :doah:. It is common knowledge that the fish move to cooler water when it warms.

Shouldn't it be the other way around?  Shouldn't the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service get a $200,000 grant from the Fond du Lac Ojibwe?

That's what I thought too.  So WE gave them the money to do THEIR study???

More PC bull sheet, why in hell are we granting $$$$$ to these pilagers? We all know what happened to mille lacs, trible netting during spawn has runined our one time crown jewel walleye lake and surrounding community.

Dang-it,cut these free loaders off at the knee's,NO MORE FREEBIES! from us tax payers.

$200k? couple elders get a new vehicle on our dime.

The tribal netting is not what caused the walleye decline on Mille Lacs.

Wanna study something?

How 'bout testing MY hypothesis?

Lets study what happens to the walleye population when you stop netting the lion's share of the quota in the middle of spawning season for 5 years ?!?

You can't do anything about water temperature, but you can do something about where, when, and how you take fish out of the lake.

Steve-o,

very good point, however we have already crossed this bridge in 2013/2014...late ice out for two years and TWO banner "yoy" (young of the year) class of walleyes,no netts = more walleyes and a healthy non stocked walleye population, mark my words we'll see another great "yoy"class of walleye from our 2018 late ice out this spring and hopefully our weak suck p.c. dnr staff will smell what we're cooking and wake the hell up.

I'm certain the DNR understands the ecology.  Its the politics that are maddening.  Tough to negotiate when you don't have any trump cards.

And the situation will not change until the State - legislature cooperating with the DNR - works to gain some bargaining power.

How about this...

Stop netting or we will open state-run casinos in North Branch, Brainerd, Moose Lake, and Milaca.

The problem is an excess of big cannibal walleye due to over reliance on slots as a means of controlling the harvest.   Kill a walleye in February or kill it in april or may, still won't spawn.

How many wheelhouses are packing skillets?

That ranger guy, Rudy Perpich, set it up so the state has no leverage via gambling authorization and gets no cut of the gambling money, unlike many other states.

Nah, I think that was his kids.   He was the governator at the time the deal for native casinos was "negotiated".  Worst part of the deal was it didn't ever expire and have to be renegotiated.

You concussed Del ? One of the more idiotic statements I've ever read in regards to commercial netting VS how many wheelhouse's have  skillets ? lol cmon man. I need that printed on a shirt. The window of solid Mille lacs ice capable of handling these wheelhouse's is so damn short most winters the eye season is over before you can get out there. The best ice fishing for walleyes Del is early ice or am I concussed ? A gall darn wheelhouse isn't making it out on early Big pond ice fella. It's a party wagon Del most wheelhouse people aren't in there with even bait on they're so drunk cmon. I don't think the like real hardcore walleye fishermen r tugging wheelhouse's and all there easy mobility jumping spot to spot on Mille lacs cmon Del. Nets full of pike eyes skee's VS the winter wheelhouse guy that uses it to sleep in after several shots of liquor. Hold on Minnesota Del says a wheelhouse is your answer to pounding walleyes if you got a rig big enough to tow it. Alrighty Delbert I'd assume see you at unclaimed freight in Milaca tomorrow does color matter ?

Ok, let's be a little more blunt.  What is the likely hood that a meaningful number of walleye get poached by "whites"?

And why is it so hard to admit that a walleye killed in the summer (or winter) won't be spawning in the spring?  And further that Mille Lacs has a recruitment problem, with fry not making it to adulthood?

I agree whole heartedly that the neting is the root cause, but the mass wheel houses, portables, and white greed for the tastless fish  is certainly not helping the cause. Friday night catch, fry. Saturday catch, fry. sunday catch, take home. over and over. Launches on LOW take clients up to the island, shore lunch, catch more. fry sat night, catch more, send home fish. red lake hundreds of plastic bags, stuffed in the snow bank and yhtrowne into ditches, fry, catch, take home. this white greed is not helping and to not address also is hypocriticle.
