Come-on Del,kill a walleye in the spring and summer = no spawn...really? ya think, thats why we have a sport fishing season for hook-n-line to give walleyes room/time to spawn,no such luxury with gill netts.they kill the walleyes by the ton's BEFORE they spawn and now we have our C.R. season for non-natives for the 3rd year no keep while the natives keep and take all they can when they can.

Oh,and before anyone starts with trible wardens watching the hen house, well it ain't happening we have video's as proof. :angry2:

I have read the DNR BS about a walleye is a walleye regardless of time of year.  It make no difference what time of year a female is harvested.  Again I say BS.  In the spring the female has gone through the process of making eggs so is a more valuable fish than one that is not full of eggs later in the year.  They are the immediate future of the walleye population.

Respectfully, that makes no sense.  Is there some particular cutoff date in the egg development process when it is no longer OK to harvest them?

You just need to recognize and admit that when you kill a fish, it will not reproduce in the future, whether that future is in days, weeks, or years.   But that is OK so long as the fish that remain can sustain the population.

In the case of Mille Lacs I haven't seen any data that insufficient natural fry production is a problem.  Have any of you guys?  My understanding was that very few were surviving the first few years.

My understanding was that very few were surviving the first few years.

Very few were surviving because there were fewer of them to survive because a certain large percentage of the spawning females were removed from the population before they could deposit their eggs to increase the fry population?

Naw.  Its easier to blame global warming and zebra muscles and cormorants.  That way we are all collectively at fault and no individual or group has to bear any responsibility or do anything different to improve things.

Sorry Lee.  It was that a very low percentage of the fry were surviving to age two or three.   Seemed to be adequate numbers of fry, but a far below normal percent was making it to catchable size.

That fact is what led to the initial crusade to whack the bass and pike.   They were suspected to be the culprits before further research revealed that the most likely culprit was the big walleyes that were dominant in the lake due to the DNR reliance on slots to limit harvest.

See ya dew, don't let the door hit ya in the arse on the way out, fact is I've been at the forfront of the issue since it started in wisc in the late 80's and spread to Mn in 1992,stood,listened to resort owners at the state capitol that lost everything from gill netting on cass, winni, low, stories that never made the news back then and now we have this dilema on mille lacs and all across canada, commerical gill netting has proven to be dentermental to our natural resourse, again letting walleyes spawn in the spring gives them a chance of laying egg's that year,I haven't seen you at any of our meeting's dew in isle the last two years.

Who are you to accuse someone of false rumors? someone who sits at home making it up as he goes, someone who hasn't been to mille lacs for years or any of our round table meetings which are ??? Think about the damage being done today and what impact these issues will have for the future of our natural resources,in this day and age is it really the right thing for natives to nett/spear ton's of spawning walleyes?

Remember,we didn't see lake fisheries collasps until the last 20 years or so,mille lacs never had a walleye population problem for at least the last 40 years (even tho our state ojib's were netting and harvesting) until the netting started in 1999 from 6 tribes coming from wisc after they ruined they're lakes, took about 13years of netting to kill red lake from research Ive done in the past,...but some still blame hook-n-line anglers over fishing on they're 50,000 acres of upper red, sure thats what happened even tho we've had leech lake trible members tell us how the red lake nation paid these folks from leech lake to harvest walleyes by the ton for they're commercial fishery operation which started up and is active again today after we non natives fixed the lake.(upper red)

False rumors my arse dew...just facts.

No sheet Del,let the fish spawn in the spring at least we have million's of egg's to spawn that spring, nett these fish before = no egg's or spawn...plus the double wammy catch em in the summer and they won't spawn the next year,we get it,we're focused on the gill netting before spawn del,let the darn fish spawn then nett if they have to...

One more time.  Kill the fish anytime during the year, it doesn't spawn the next spring.  August, December, February, April, makes no difference.   In Minnesota walleye were protected during the spawn because they were vulnerable then, not because there was some magic time.

As for the issues with mille lacs, used to be that there were no depth finders, no gps, no high resolution maps, and the state of the art was a 16 foot lund with a 50 merc and only the hard core had those.  Joe Blow had a 14 footer with a 10 horse on the back.   And driving from cities to Mille Lacs with your boat was a big deal.

Oh, and septic systems aren't leaking into the lake as much either... :sleazy:

Oh okay delburt,whatever.... some just can't see the big picture,I agree to stop beating a dead horse, how's that. oh sure hook-n-line sportsfishermen/women and locators are the culprits here.. News flash del, this "not gill netting walleyes before they spawn" is a re-occurring cycle every year, every spring the walleyes drop eggs if allowed too in which doing so allows millions of eggs to drop, sure we sports non-natives will catch plenty of spawned out fish that summer at least they had a chance to drop eggs when it matters and this cycle is nothing new, this cycle has been going on way before I popped out into this world and our walleye population was always healthy until 1999 with a good rebound in 2013/2014 because of late ice out and no netts ,you have seen the data on this "yoy" class of walleyes for these two years right?

Walleyes are a small part of whats happening with our sovrerign nations as a whole, today they feel entitled to a "do over" and want land back that was sold 150years ago,gee I wonder how many folks lost everything at trible casino's,bet they would like a do over or just get they're  $$$ back.
