My 78 year old father shot a bear with his 45 70 tonight.  It was standing at the barrel with his back to him when he shot.  I know it's not smart but he got excited.  Figures a single lung.  He was trying to spine him.  He couldn't find the bear.  I can't get there until morning.  Will meat still be good?

The bear came in the 1st time at 645.  It heard dad move and ran away.  Came back in at 715 from down wind and was jumpy.  He stood up next to the BLACK barrel with his back to my dad. Dad shoots and the bear runs off.  Dad watched him for 50 yards as he makes a bee line for the corner and disappeares.
Found the holes in the barrel and found the bullet buried in the ground.   Zero blood or hair on the barrel.

We did a grid search of the area for 2 hours and found nothing.  Conclusion:  dead barrel, live but educated bear.

Bear showed up 3 days in a row after we put out some beaver castor with the fat and candy.

:happy1: :happy1: not so much the miss but end result. Maybe not a happy Hunter though. One thing with bear that gets beat hard after the kill. The sooner you can skin the bear,  trim as much fat off as possible and cool the better.

Are you sure he didn't just see the barrel and think it was a bear.  :rotflmao:
