Our foriegn exchange student from 3 years ago came to visit us.  Last time she was here we took her fishing in a canoe.  She only caught 1 small pike so we had to do better.  We took her to one of my best and most reliable spots, Pelican lake between buffalo and Monticello. We got to the lake at sunrise.  I road with a friend on his ATV and Andrea caught a ride with the legend Deadeye.  He explained stuff on their mile ride out to our spot.  It didn't take to long and we bad our 1st flag.   We ran to the flag and Andrea caught her 1st pike.  The biggest of the day.  Way bigger than both Glen and Boars. We also introduced her to spearing.  We went and knocked on a spear house.   She caught 6 pike on the day,  One on a hotdog. We also had grilled venison.  She had venison last time she was here and said it was awesome.  She also got to drill a few holes.  We took a ride in a trailer to get back to the access.  She thought that was crazy.  And to finish the day off she build a huge snowman at the access. Thanks Deadeye for the help in makeing her day great!!!

Awesome!  The smiles say it all, good times, good friends, good weather, & great memories. I'm sure she'll be telling anyone who'll listen to her back home about her adventure for a very long time.

Yes it was indeed a great time on the lake.  Lots of bull was shot along with some actual fishing. We had to drive 1.9 miles from the landing.  During the trip we navigated through small humps covered in tall grass, dirt ridges, frozen mud flats, past pressure ridges with open water and on some actual ice.  I had to keep telling our Spanish girl when we were on "ground" and when we were on "water"  Some times on Pelican you feel like you are fishing in a farmers meadow.  She was a real trooper, not afraid to tackle anything while fishing.  She landed some handlining and some with a short ice rod.  And, she learned well form dakids as once she beat every one and hollered "FLAG, FLAG".

Day 2 on the ice was colder, windy, and cloudy.  Fishing was slower but she still had fun.

Springs, they could be what saved the pike during the kill off.

The open water on Pelican is not from springs.  It occurs around the pressure ridges.  The pressure ridges (there are at least three that I know of) are caused by expanding ice around points or just where they darn well feel like it.  Just like the subduction that occurs when one tectonic plate slides under another, the ice on one side gets pushed down causing water to flow over it.  If you blow up the attached photo of my wheeler, you can see one in the background. I is about 80 yards away.  Several days ago the ice ridge that is visible towards the right side was visible and extended all the way to the right side. (This is over and old road that connected the two points back in the 1930's).  Over the past few days most of the ridge fell into the water and was pushed under the other ice.  This is a spot that someone will drive in at night.

I got a pretty good idea of where that's at. I am assuming you come on from the north side, think its like 188th street?????????? its like straight out once you get past all the bull rushes, when we went there last year we went to the left by some deadheads sticking outta ice.

my wife said her brother in law, not mine, drove out on pelican sat, did you see any vehicles?

Yes, I saw quite a few.  Several came all the way from the south west access across the main body of water (one had to go around a pressure ridge) to get to me.  There is 13 inches of ice.  This is not on the north side.  It's about 1.9 miles from the north east access.  I can see the north side.
