:reporter;    Tribal member fined for abandoned net. :banghead:

4/3/19

 :coffee: ....
Two Fond du Lac band members have appeared in tribal court for their role in leaving a gill net abandoned in Mille Lacs Lake last spring.

 :doah:
The net was found floating in the big central Minnesota lake last May. There were 67 walleyes in the net — dead and wasted because the net hadn't been retrieved in a timely manner. :angry2:

  ....
As reported last week in the News Tribune, Fond du Lac tribal officials conducted an investigation and confirmed Wednesday that the case was closed last July without any public notice. :whistling: They said the two people — a father and minor daughter — appeared in tribal court to face tribal charges in the case. The father accepted responsibility and was fined for the violation which a tribal official described as an unfortunate oversight and not intentional. :bs: Tribal officials did not release the band members names.

:taz:
The lake's famous walleye population is divided between tribal netting/speaking harvest and recreational fishing harvest under joint management for lakes within ceded territories in Minnesota. :banghead:

 :angry2: ....
A conservation officer pulls an abandoned tribal gillnet full of dead walleye from Lake Mille Lacs Saturday, May 20, 2018. The net, registered to the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, was recovered by officers from an American Indian band and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. I think the point of this thread - and the issue in general - is that there are two sets of laws in place here with a lack of transparency on one side.

Is it any wonder that there are emotional reactions?

There have been emotional reactions since the deal was made.  It was emotional reactions that scuttled the first deal and got DNR to lose at Supreme Court.     People should try to use their heads, rather than knee jerk emotions.

Yeah everyone is sad about how screwed up the lake is.   And no one wants to admit that they and their representatives are part of the problem.    When the DNR allowed over harvest by non-indians, killing more that our share, was there an outcry?

https://www.wadenapj.com/node/4091603

And it happened for several years 2015 for example as well as several other years.

BTW the minutes of the meeting of the ceded territory fish management meetings are online at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/millelacslake/index.html

Yeah those darn hook and line fisherman with their sustainable limits which kept 40 resorts and businesses around the lake going for the last hundred years!  :bs: :bs: :coffee:

Carcasses found in three spots are an embarrassment for the eight Chippewa bands that net Lake Mille Lacs.

These walleye carcasses were found on the Tenhoffs’ property near Isle, Minn. Carcasses also were dumped at two other spots.

Oddly isn't that just what your saying? It's everyone else's fault but, the breeder takers?   :coffee:

Like I said Del.  I have heard the DNR guys say that too and they are completely wrong about the value of that fish!  A walleye regardless of size in let's say June has a value.  That same walleye in the spring chock full of eggs has a much greater value to the overall specie due to any day releasing millions of eggs.  Killing that resource days before it lays the eggs is insane! UNLESS you don't want that specie to survive.  Then go ahead and destroy all that the natural reproduction the day before it happens and ruin a years worth of progress.

AND that may make their hatcheries more valuable cuz we wrecked another year of natural reproduction.

If you are seriously worried about your fishery degrading or not being self-sustaining - the last thing you want to do is to exploit the resource when it is most vulnerable.

In the worst days of walleye population estimates in Mille Lacs, instead of reducing net quotas and shutting down sport angling, why didn't they shut down netting during the spawn to maximize the recovery rate and then allow the full "reduced" quota to be caught by hook and line anglers during the summer and ice seasons?

One more time...   Killing a walleye in Feb is the same as killing that same walleye in April.   In fact, killing it in June is nearly the same as killing it in april.   In any case that fish is gone from the lake and won't spawn again.

Worrying about when the fish is most vulnerable is only important if you aren't keeping track of the harvest and want to put obstacles in the way to reduce harvest.

In the case of the natives, a specific amount of harvest takes place.   It doesn't matter if it were to happen in a single day in spring or be spread out over the whole year.   It also doesn't matter how those fish are taken, net, spear, hook and line, dynamite, whatever.

Look at all those folks at Red Wing in the spring catching walleye just before and during the spawn, they are harvesting up to 6 walleye per person, with a continuous season.

The main problem with Mille Lacs is that there was over harvest in total and the DNR managed to screw it up badly by using a slot to try to limit the harvest.   Restoring the population is turning out to be really painful for a few years, especially given that they need to keep the resort owners and other people who make a living off the lake happy.

Actually what I see is a time element.  They wait all year to get that female that has spent the whole year getting to the stage that she is full of eggs and that is when she is taken.  Instead of waiting a couple of weeks and letting the bountiful harvest begin after the eggs have been deposited to propagate the species.  Otherwise why close any seasons at all if we don't care about adults having young?

I stand corrected.  July 31, 2015.

No netting on Lake Mille Lacs next year

"Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton received a standing ovation at Isle High School when he announced Friday there will be no netting of fish on Lake Mille Lacs next year. The Mille Lacs Band has agreed to cease netting to help restore the lake’s valuable walleye population."

So, how many months before the spawn are you up for killing a walleye?
