BEMIDJI—Bruce Anspach stood on the public-access dock of Big Turtle Lake on a recent Thursday afternoon and threw the head of a rake into the water. He dragged it back by the attached rope and knelt down to look at the tangled glob of the invasive species Starry Stonewort he just fished out from the bottom of the water.


The algae strands were fairly small, and there were only a few of the telltale white, star shaped bulbils scattered in the mix. But, judging from what he's seen in recent years, Anspach knows the strands of Starry Stonewort will undoubtedly grow before the summer's over.

I just found out 2 weeks ago dat Starry Stonewort was discovered In Lake Geneva (south east Wis) (that's the lake I guide on!)

The townships surrounding L. Geneva refused ta pitch in financially ta partner wit da DNR in controlling da spread. DNR ask fur financial help from the surrounding townships. They refused even though all the homes around the lake are owned by very wealthy folks with mansions

So last I heard der lookin fur volunteers ta help out.

It's been found over on the west side, where the Mississippi comes in, of Winnie too. They're saying it gets so thick that it's impossible to get a boat & motor through it.
