Reserve gas tank

On my new to me boat I have a reserve fuel tank.  There is a knob I can turn to use the reserve fuel.  My question is:  Is there actually an extra tank?  So if one never uses the reserve fuel does it actually sit there for years and get bad?  I have had a lot of boats but never one with the reserve.

they are usually the same tank, just a split setting I'd say...

That's what I was hoping.  Like a motorcycle.  Just a lower line or something but still all one tank with the same gas.

Same tank. They use two pickups; one is lower in the tank towards the back.

Is this a totally enclosed boat or how hard is it to look around for another plastic box some where in the hall with gas lines coming out of it?  Try and follow each line back or get a hold of the Mfg and ask? 

Does it have an elc, gas gauge?  If so watch the gauge when you flip the reserve fuel knob, if there are two tanks chances are they don't have the same amount of fuel in them?

Ya it's a lever at the back of the boat that is actually a T in the lines.
